Description

This is the repository of open educational resources collected by the FETLAR project. FETLAR (Finding Electronic Teaching, Learning and Assessment Resources) was the Subject Strand project from the MSOR (Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research) community within the HEA’s Open Education Resources (OER) programme. FETLAR concentrated on improving the student experience at the transition into HE disciplines where numeracy and mathematics have a supporting role. The resources are being added to as more becomes available with suitable licences.

Description

After initial casting of this steel it was subject to a process known as carburisation. The metal is heated to above the ferrite-austenite transition in a carbon atmosphere. This establishes a concentration gradient and hence carbon diffuses into the steel. Usually the steel is then hardened by quenching. This produces what is known as a case hardened steel - with a hard surface (case) surrounding a tough core. This micrograph has been taken from the bulk of the sample, showing that carbon does not diffuse significantly into the interior of a case hardened steel.

Description

Crazes are both a precursor to cracking and a toughening mechanism in stressed polymers. They only form when a certain critical tensile stress has been attained and form perpendicular to the largest tensile principal stress. They are very fine crack-like projections from the fracture surface but are bridged by even finer material, giving approximately 50% voids. It is these fibrils which interfere with light in an otherwise transparent polymer to make the crazing visible as a whitening of the strained material.
