Classification developments in the Paralympic Games. Are we keeping the Paralympics competitive?

Description

The classification systems in the Paralympics are complex and difficult to administer. This case study illustrates the Paralympic sport of Boccia, which has four categories, and considers the different approaches of sports incorporating the 'functional ability classification, the type of disability, and in 2012 the reintroduction of the intellectual disability classification

How we won the bid

Description

For the British people, Wednesday 6th July, 2005, was a momentous and historic day. That was the day that Britain was awarded the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Such an announcement transformed the image of Britain as a nation capable of hosting large scale sporting mega-events

Non-London Olympic venues

Description

The London 2012 bid has met with criticism for its perceived London-centric nature. Many people are not aware that the Games will involve the use of many sites outside of London, meaning that many non-London towns and cities will benefit from the economic, social and financial legacy of the Games. Non-London venues are introduced here

Security-an elite anti-fire system for the 2012 Olympics

Description

LOCOG came under fire (if one can excuse the pun!) recently, for failure to budget appropriately for Security provisions for the Games. Such a provision would have included significant provision for fire-related activity. Although LOCOG have now revised their original budget to better cater for security and fire concerns, they may have been relying additionally on the major financial investments that the Government had recently made in the development of a £1bn network of fire centres, powered by impressive IT systems costing a cool £2m

What can London 2012 learn from Vancouver 2010?

Description

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Games were undoubtedly a success. One only has to remember the throngs of crowds lining up to have their photo taken with the Olympic Flame, the new urban developments that showcased Olympic events in the centre of the city, and the incredibly beautiful backdrop to the events of mountains, sea and glass-filled urban landscape that characterises one of the most beautiful cities in the Western hemisphere

Volunteering at the 2012 Games

Description

The 2012 Games will not be able to take place without the support of 70,000 official volunteers. In turn, each volunteer also needs help and support in order to successfully take up their role and to benefit fully from their involvement. The experiences and perceptions of one volunteer in Sports Therapy illustrate the level of support needed and the benefits of their experience

Removing the 'D word'

Description

The 2012 London Olympic Games will see Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee Paralympic multiple gold medallist compete in the 400 m event, after he found himself at the centre of a legal maelstrom when the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) pre-emptively banned him from competing in the Olympic Games in Beijing, because of his use of prosthetic legs (carbon fibre blades nicknamed ‘cheeta’s). The case was taken to appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which ruled in favour of Pistorius, and this case study considers the arguments for and against such a ruling

The Games in schools - PE and cross curricular impacts

Description

School-based initiatives are the most effective way to use the Games to engage and excite children and young people. 1- Can short school based initiatives have a longer-term impact on sport participation, learning and behaviour? 2- Are there Olympic and Paralympic themes beyond sport that can engage and excite children and young people? 3- Is it realistic to try to use the Games to get children and young people who don’t like sport to play more?

How will we know if the Games benefit young people

Description

The only effective way to find out if the Games benefit young people is to ask them. 1- Is it possible to find out whether the Olympic and Paralympic Games have benefitted young people? 2- Should Games organisers and politicians tell us more about how they are going to measure whether they have delivered their promises? 3- Why is using London 2012 to benefit young people important? Isn’t organising Games that people enjoy watching enough?

Paralympic Sport: are we equal yet?

Description

This case study considers equality for able-bodied athletes, and athletes/persons with a disability, from a financial point of view. A brief history of the Paralympic Games is presented, before asking readers to consider the differences in funding between a) Olympic and Paralympic sports in general, b) the same sport that is awarded less funding at Paralympic level than at Olympic level, and c) individual Paralympic sports. In order to consider these financial issues, brief contextualisation of the history of the Paralympic Games is necessary

Race and ethnicity in the Olympic Games

On October 2, 1968, more than 300 students and workers at La Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, Mexico City were gunned down by police, on the order of former President Luis Echeverria. Those that lost their lives were protesting against the staging of the Olympic Games in a country that was struggling with poverty and an endemic lack of funding in vital public services such as education and healthcare
