AFFIRM Assessment and Formative Feedback In Research Methods - literature review

Description

‘AFFIRM’ is part of Leeds Met’s efforts to promote research-informed teaching. A pilot project, it is concerned with computer-assisted assessment (CAA) related to the teaching of research methods. Over a 12-month period in 2007-8 it will create, test and evaluate a small computerised bank of quality-checked items to support undergraduate and taught postgraduate-level research methods teaching. Although the items are likely to have several potential uses, i.e. to be ‘reusable learning objects’ (RLOs), their primary function will probably be as components of various types of formative assessment. To enhance their effectiveness in this, particular efforts will be made to ensure items provide rich formative feedback to learners. In addition, they will contain metadata’ (descriptive

Description

This course examines the economic, political, social, and spatial dynamics of urban growth and decline in cities and their key component areas (downtown, suburbs, etc.). Topics include impacts of industrialization, technology, politics, and social practices on cities. Students will examine the role of public and private sector activities, ranging from zoning and subsidies to infrastructure development and real estate investment, in affecting urban growth and decline. Readings are both theoretical and empirical, with considerable thought paid to comparative and historical differences. 18.S66 The Art of Counting (MIT) 18.S66 The Art of Counting (MIT)

Description

The subject of enumerative combinatorics deals with counting the number of elements of a finite set. For instance, the number of ways to write a positive integer n as a sum of positive integers, taking order into account, is 2n-1. We will be concerned primarily with bijective proofs, i.e., showing that two sets have the same number of elements by exhibiting a bijection (one-to-one correspondence) between them. This is a subject which requires little mathematical background to reach the frontiers of current research. Students will therefore have the opportunity to do original research. It might be necessary to limit enrollment. The subject of enumerative combinatorics deals with counting the number of elements of a finite set. 'Amber Pacific' ready for launch

Description

View of the bulk carrier 'Amber Pacific' ready for launch at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, 16 July 1969 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/6/55325B). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. George Eliot 3. Reception History George Eliot 3. Reception History

Description

In this third and final podcast, Dr Catherine Brown discusses the popularity of George Eliot's work in the Victorian period, which led to her status as a sage and the steady accumulation of her wealth. Reviews of Eliot's work by Henry James, Virginia Woolf, and F.R Leavis are included in this lecture, which traces the reception history of Eliot's texts in the Victorian period and beyond. Catherine Brown examines the development of the 'modernist smirk' which looked down at Victorian literature, and follows Eliot's work into the present moment, where she demonstrates the application of Eliot's novels in Deconstructionist and Marxist approaches; the link between Eliot's texts and Feminist theory; and the relation of Eliot's work to science.
