Black Presence: Asian and Black history in Britain, 1500 - 1850

Description

This is a virtual interactive exhibition about people of African and Asian origin having lived in Britain for at least two thousand years. By presenting a selection of relevant records held by The National Archives and other sources, the Black Presence exhibition aims to reclaim some of this history and make it more widely known. The online galleries cover early times; Africa and the Caribbean; India; work and community; rights; and culture. There are two interactive learning journeys: A Virtual Tour of Black and Asian Presence in Britain; and An 18th Century Voyage of Discovery.

21M.775 Hip Hop (MIT) 21M.775 Hip Hop (MIT)

Description

This class explores the political and aesthetic foundations of hip hop. Students trace the musical, corporeal, visual, spoken word, and literary manifestations of hip hop over its 30 year presence in the American cultural imagery. Students also investigate specific black cultural practices that have given rise to its various idioms. Students create material culture related to each thematic section of the course. Scheduled work in performance studio helps students understand how hip hop is created and assessed. This class explores the political and aesthetic foundations of hip hop. TALAT Lecture 3208: The Finishing of Castings TALAT Lecture 3208: The Finishing of Castings

Description

This lecture provides an introduction to some of the finer points in the production of high quality castings. The students will be able to understand the various processes for sealing porosity in badly made castings and to appreciate factors influencing the accuracy of castings, including a basic understanding of how to control and measure casting dimensions. Basic understanding of the foundry industry is assumed. This lecture provides an introduction to some of the finer points in the production of high quality castings. Notes on Democracy Notes on Democracy

Description

This book should come with a warning label. It is surely one of the most bracing books on politics in the history of the English language. There is more truth in these pages than most Americans are willing to face. What Mencken delivers here is probably the most scathing attack on the idea of mass rule that has ever been written.Mencken is known as the chief heretic of the American civic religion, and this book shows why. Your eyes will pop out at not only his dazzling prose but, and most especially, at the thoughts that he dares put in print, almost as a revolutionary act.  This book should come with a warning label. 6.881 Natural Language Processing (MIT) 6.881 Natural Language Processing (MIT)

Description

This course is a graduate level introduction to natural language processing, the primary concern of which is the study of human language from a computational perspective. The class will cover models at the level of syntactic, semantic and discourse processing. The emphasis will be on corpus-based methods and algorithms, such as Hidden Markov Models and probabilistic context free grammars. We will discuss the use of these methods and models in a variety of applications including syntactic parsing, information extraction, statistical machine translation, and summarization. This subject qualifies as an Artificial Intelligence and Applications concentration subject.Technical RequirementsFile decompression software, such as Winzip® or StuffIt®, is required to open the .gz and .tar This course is a graduate level introduction to natural language processing, the primary concern of which is the study of human language from a computational perspective. The class will cover models at the level of syntactic, semantic and discourse processing. 12.215 Modern Navigation (MIT) 12.215 Modern Navigation (MIT)

Description

The development of the Global Positioning System (GPS) started in the 1960s, and the system became operational in 1992. The system has seen many diverse applications develop in the last few years with the accuracy of positioning ranging from 100 meters (the civilian restricted accuracy requirement) to 1 millimeter (without the need for a security clearance!) In this course we will apply many of basic principles of science and mathematics learnt at MIT to explore the applications and principles of GPS. We also use GPS and other equipment in the class (and outside on Campus) to demonstrate the uses of this system.Technical RequirementsAny number of development tools can be used to compile and run the .f files found on this course site. 2.007 Design and Manufacturing I (MIT) 2.007 Design and Manufacturing I (MIT)

Description

This course develops students' competence and self-confidence as design engineers. Emphasis is on the creative design process bolstered by application of physical laws, and learning to complete projects on schedule and within budget. Synthesis, analysis, design robustness and manufacturability are emphasized. The subject relies on active learning via a major design-and-build project. Lecture topics include idea generation, estimation, concept selection, visual thinking and communication, kinematics of mechanisms, machine elements, design for manufacturing, basic electronics, and professional responsibilities and ethics. A required on-line evaluation is given at the beginning and the end of the course so students can assess their design knowledge. Attachment in the early years Attachment in the early years

Description

This free course, Attachment in the early years, covers theory and research in the area of attachment in early childhood. In the 1950s, John Bowlby was the first person to develop a theory about the significance of early attachments between caregivers and very young children. His work has stimulated a massive and very productive field of research with important implications for childcare. This OpenLearn course describes Bowlby's theory and the work that has built on it, illustrated with video recordings of the assessment of attachment in a laboratory setting and a talk by an eminent attachment researcher. First published on Tue, 16 Feb 2016 as Attachment in the early years. To find out more visit The Open University's Openlearn website. 6.685 Electric Machines (MIT) 6.685 Electric Machines (MIT)

Description

6.685 explores concepts in electromechanics, using electric machinery as examples. It teaches an understanding of principles and analysis of electromechanical systems. By the end of the course, students are capable of doing electromechanical design of the major classes of rotating and linear electric machines and have an understanding of the principles of the energy conversion parts of Mechatronics. In addition to design, students learn how to estimate the dynamic parameters of electric machines and understand what the implications of those parameters are on the performance of systems incorporating those machines. 6.685 explores concepts in electromechanics, using electric machinery as examples. Delamination cracks in h-BN particles. Delamination cracks in h-BN particles.

Description

h-BN particles were subjected to compressive stress in the (0001) planes (within a silicon nitride particulate-reinforced silicon carbide composite). The occurrence of BN inclusions results from the introduction of colloidal BN into the hot isostatic pressing process. They are formed from B2O3 present as a thin surface film on the BN particles in the barrier layer. B2O3 will be molten during the pressing process and will diffuse rapidly into the powder compact and react with Si3N4 to form BN. Such inclusions can be related to failure under thermal cycling or creep test conditions (due to cavities and microcracks associated with them), may be grain growth controllers, and may influence crack deflection and slow crack growth at high temperatures. 6.090 Building Programming Experience: A Lead-In to 6.001 (MIT) 6.090 Building Programming Experience: A Lead-In to 6.001 (MIT)

Description

This course will serve as a two-week aggressively gentle introduction to programming for those students who lack background in the field. Specifically targeted at students with little or no programming experience, the course seeks to reach students who intend to take 6.001 and feel they would struggle because they lack the necessary background. The main focus of the subject will be acquiring programming experience: instruction in programming fundamentals coupled with lots of practice problems. Lots of programming required, but lots of support provided. This course will serve as a two-week aggressively gentle introduction to programming for those students who lack background in the field.
