Description

Part of the Shelley's Ghost Exhibition. Shelley presented this light-hearted poem, copied out in his best hand, with the guitar he gave to Jane Williams in 1822. Taking his cue, perhaps, from the Shakespearean Christian name of the guitar's maker, Ferdinando, he casts himself and the Williamses as characters from The Tempest: they are the lovers Miranda and Ferdinand, he is Ariel, the spirit of fire and air. The wood of the guitar is from a tree that 'Died in sleep, and felt no pain, To live in happier form again'. Only the most skilful hands can release the harmonies of nature preserved in the instrument, and 'It keeps its highest holiest tone / For our beloved Jane alone'. Thermoset case of an electrical plug

Description

The microstructure revealed by the dye consists of seams of filler material (flour or wood-pulp) which is introduced to the melt in a 2:1 ratio part way through the moulding process. Urea thermosets are used because they are hard, inexpensive, and have good resistance to electrical arcing. An additional benefit of a thermoset as opposed to a thermoplastic in this application is that should a failure occur, it will fail in a safe mode (charring, but retaining it form, rather than melting).

TALAT Lecture 1253: Creep

Description

This lecture constitutes an introduction to creep and to the creep response of aluminium and its alloys. It provides basic information on creep and its mechanisms; it gives a description of the more extensively used mathematical relations among creep variables (time, stress and temperature); it illustrates the creep response of pure Aluminium and of Al-Mg alloys; it provides a synthesis of the information available in the literature on the creep behaviour of a number of new alloys and composites in the form of a series of figures elaborated on the basis of the data reported in same sources. Basic knowledge of physics and chemistry and some familiarity with TALAT lectures 1201 through 1205 is assumed.

Making Sovereign Finance and Human Rights Work

Description

Discussion of 'Making Sovereign Finance and Human Rights Work,' a recently-published collection that introduces novel legal theories and analyses the links between sovereign debt and human rights from a variety of perspectives. Poor public resource management and the global financial crisis curbing fundamental fiscal space, millions thrown into poverty, and authoritarian regimes running successful criminal campaigns with the help of financial assistance are all phenomena that raise fundamental questions around finance and human rights. They also highlight the urgent need for more systematic and robust legal and economic thinking about sovereign finance and human rights. The recently published edited collection Making Sovereign Finance and Human Rights Work aims to contribute to filling Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/

1.017 Computing and Data Analysis for Environmental Applications (MIT)

Description

This subject is a computer-oriented introduction to probability and data analysis. It is designed to give students the knowledge and practical experience they need to interpret lab and field data. Basic probability concepts are introduced at the outset because they provide a systematic way to describe uncertainty. They form the basis for the analysis of quantitative data in science and engineering. The MATLAB® programming language is used to perform virtual experiments and to analyze real-world data sets, many downloaded from the web. Programming applications include display and assessment of data sets, investigation of hypotheses, and identification of possible casual relationships between variables. This is the first semester that two courses, Computing and Data Analysis for Environm

Machining the base plates

Description

Machining the base plates of the shells at the National Projectile Factory, Birtley, 21 June 1916 (TWAM ref. 1027/271). These images belong to an album of photographs taken in the National Projectile Factory, Birtley (near Gateshead) during the First World War. The photographs were taken by Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, who built the factory. The images date from June 1916, shortly after the factory became operational. What makes the factory (and these photographs of it) so special is that all the management and workers there were Belgian. The factory and the nearby village of Elisabethville (built to accommodate them) were like a little corner of Belgium transplanted to the North East of England. More information about the factory and the village of Elisabethville can be found in the blog, which accompanies this set.
