UCI Math 113B: Intro to Mathematical Modeling in Biology (Fall 2014) Lec 01. Intro to Mathematical Modeling in Biology: Introduction to the Course View the complete course: http://ocw.uci.edu/courses/math_113b_intro_to_mathematical_modeling_in_biology.html Instructor: German A. Enciso, Ph.D. Textbook: Mathematical Models in Biology by Leah Edelstein-Keshet, SIAM, 2005 License: Creative Commons CC-BY-SA Terms of Use: http://ocw.uci.edu/info More courses at http://ocw.uci.edu Description: UCI Math 113B is intended for both mathematics and biology undergrads with a basic mathematics background, and it consists of an introduction to modeling biological problems using continuous ODE methods (rather than discrete methods as used in 113A). We describe the basic qualitative behavior of dynamical systems in the context of a simple population model. As time allows, we will then discuss other types of models such as chemical reactions inside the cell, or excitable systems leading to oscillations and neuronal signals. The necessary linear algebra is also discussed to avoid including additional requirements for this course. Recorded on January 6, 2014 Required attribution: Enciso, German A. At its greatest extent the former Soviet Union encompassed a geographical area that covered one-sixth of the Earth's landmass. It spanned 11 time zones and contained over 100 distinct nationalities, 22 of which numbered over one million in population. In the 74 years from the October Revolution in 1917 to the fall of Communism in 1991, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, its leaders and its people, had to face a number of difficult challenges: the overthrow of the Tsarist autocracy, the establishment of a new state, four years of civil war, a famine, transition to a mixed economy, political strife after Lenin's death, industrialization, collectivization, a second famine, political Show Trials, World War II, post-war reconstruction and repression, the "Thaw" after Stalin's death, At its greatest extent the former Soviet Union encompassed a geographical area that covered one-sixth of the Earth's landmass. Henry Mendell (California State) gives a talk for the Power Structualism in Ancient Ontologies series Abstract: Historians in the twentieth century argued about whether Aristotle presents a general theory of dynamics in Physics VII 5 or merely presents examples from ordinary experience, which he then applies abstractly to arguments about the unmoved mover and general issues about the balance of elements in the sublunary realm. Recently the pendulum of opinion has swayed towards taking Aristotle's account more robustly as a general theory of dynamics, but more can be said. I shall argue that one reason why the debate arose was because both sides have seen the examples in the context of Greek style mathematics, where we expect generalized principles and theorems, often couched in a modern, Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/
