The focus is on coding techniques for approaching the Shannon limit of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, their performance analysis, and design principles. After a review of 6.450 and the Shannon limit for AWGN channels, the course begins by discussing small signal constellations, performance analysis and coding gain, and hard-decision and soft-decision decoding. It continues with binary linear block codes, Reed-Muller codes, finite fields, Reed-Solomon and BCH codes, binary linear convolutional codes, and the Viterbi algorithm. Description

Information Technology I helps students understand technical concepts underlying current and future developments in information technology. There will be a special emphasis on networks and distributed computing. Students will also gain some hands-on exposure to powerful, high-level tools for making computers do amazing things, without the need for conventional programming languages. Since 15.564 is an introductory course, no knowledge of how computers work or are programmed is assumed. La técnica endoscópica ofrece en este campo una gran seguridad diagnóstica, gracias a la posibilidad de obtener biopsias en los diferentes tramos explorados. Los objetivos específicos de este curso de Endoscopia son formar a los alumnos en la utilización y manejo del endoscopio y la toma de biopsias de las diferentes porciones del aparato digestivo, con fines diagnósticos. Robert joined the School of Economics in January 2006 having previously been Professor of Econometrics at the University of Birmingham. His research interests are in the area of time-series econometrics with particular focus on: the use of bootstrap methods with non-stationary time series, co-integration methods, (seasonal) unit root tests, stationarity tests, stochastic volatility, persistence change testing and structural breaks. He has published a number of articles in refereed journals including Econometrica, Journal of Econometrics, Econometric Theory, Journal of Time Series Analysis and Journal of Business and Economic Statistics. He is a fellow of the Journal of Econometrics. He is Director of the Granger Centre for Time Series Econometrics, located within the School of Economics. Competition in Telecommunications provides an introduction to the economics, business strategies, and technology of telecommunications markets. This includes markets for wireless communications, local and long-distance services, and customer equipment. The convergence of computers, cable TV and telecommunications and the competitive emergence of the Internet are covered in depth. A number of speakers from leading companies in the industry will give course lectures. Microeconomics (11.203) is a course that runs for the first two-thirds of the semester. It is designed for incoming city planning students with little or no economics background. Incoming students take a voluntary microeconomics test-out at the beginning of the semester. The fact of scarcity forces individuals, firms, and societies to choose among alternative uses – or allocations – of its limited resources. Accordingly, the first part of this summer course seeks to understand how economists model the choice process of individual consumers and firms, and how markets work to coordinate these choices. It also examines how well markets perform this function using the economist's criterion of market efficiency. Overall, this course focuses on microeconomics, with some topics from macroeconomics and international trade. It emphasizes the integration of theory, data, and judgment in the analysis of corporate decisions and public policy, and in the assessment of changing U.S. and international business environments.
