Assignments to support the learning process

Description

In this unit, we will look at the kind of assignments that challenge learners to go beyond mere regurgitation of facts. We will look at ways of constructing assignments so that the assignments themselves provide the scaffolding through the course. We will explore options for encouraging collaborative learning while still ensuring that each individual pulls his or her own weight. We will also look at the use of e-portfolios as a teaching and assessment tool.

Collaborative and eventful assessment at Edinburgh College Sighthill Campus

Description

In an attempt to reduce the assessment burden on students and to maintain relevancy in the curriculum, the decision was taken to use a social media unit as a vehicle of communication, to facilitate assessment between a number of units within HNC Events. The main aim was to ensure that students were aware of the different tools available to them, and that they would be able to use these tools appropriately both in a personal and employment situation.

Using Mahara: working with placements at Borders College

Description

The project allows students to complete 2 workplace portfolios in Mahara for their Working in an Early Education and Childcare Setting unit of the HNC Early Education and Childcare course. The work placement supervisors are given access to view the student’s portfolios whilst in progress and give feedback to the students (and lecturer) as the portfolio is being updated. This was partly achieved through the use of an iPad in the field by our placement officer with the external supervisor.

Introducing an ePortfolio to develop reflective practice with PGDE students at the UHI

Description

Using Mahara as the e-Portfolio system and the BlackBoard learning platform for module delivery, e-Portfolio activities were embedded into the course design of the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in order to scaffold and encourage reflective practice. The ePortfolio was developed to enable reflection against the General Teaching Council of Scotland (GTCS) teaching standards. These were embedded throughout the course. A collection of pages was made available for students in Mahara which provided the starting point for ePortfolio development. Blackboard sessions were developed using a template which provided an underpinning structure to the course and was shaped by the principles of the Curriculum for Excellence.

Online hospitality courses at Dumfries and Galloway College

Description

The hospitality classes at Dumfries and Galloway College currently undertake either an SVQ Level 2 or a Level 3 Professional Cookery qualification. This year it was decided to trial a fully online version of this course. The students follow an SVQ programme of units and have to compile large portfolios of evidence to back up their practical work which is carried out in practical kitchen and restaurant settings within the college. There are also several Modern Apprentice students undertaking this qualification based in local businesses and these students are assessed in the workplace. It was decided to use our VLE in conjunction with e-Portfolio software to try to reduce paperwork.
