Description

Includes audio/video content: AV faculty introductions. 1.050 is a sophomore-level engineering mechanics course, commonly labelled "Statics and Strength of Materials" or "Solid Mechanics I." This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and methods of structural mechanics. Topics covered include: static equilibrium, force resultants, support conditions, analysis of determinate planar structures (beams, trusses, frames), stresses and strains in structural elements, states of stress (shear, bending, torsion), statically indeterminate systems, displacements and deformations, introduction to matrix methods, elastic stability, and approximate methods. Design exercises are used to encourage creative student initiative and systems thinking. Description

This exercise is to emphasise Germany as a federal state as opposed to a nation state such as England. The map of Germany is divided into Bundelaender old and new, some more, some less familiar to students. Filling in the map is best done as a tutorial pair work or small group exercise. An extension to this exercise are the flags of each Bundesland. Here some historical and geographical knowledge is useful, for example the Brandenburg eagle or Niedersachsen horse. The flags are important to German regional identity and dialect. These exercises especially lend themselves to an excursion into Landeskunde with more advanced students. Students should be invited to bring in their own experiences of Germany and German culture.

This is an intermediate workshop designed for students who have a basic understanding of the principles of theatrical design and who want a more intensive study of costume design and the psychology of clothing. Students develop designs that emerge through a process of character analysis, based on the script and directorial concept. Period research, design, and rendering skills are fostered through practical exercises. Instruction in basic costume construction, including drafting and draping, provide tools for students to produce final projects. This course introduces the principles of mass transport and electrical signal generation for biological membranes, cells, and tissues. Topics covered include: mass transport through membranes (diffusion, osmosis, chemically mediated, and active transport), electric properties of cells (ion transport), equilibrium, resting, and action potentials, kinetic and molecular properties of single voltage-gated ion channels. Laboratory and computer exercises illustrate the course concepts. Students engage in extensive written and oral communication exercises. This course is an intensive introduction to architectural design tools and process, and is taught through a series of short exercises. The conceptual basis of each exercise is in the interrogation of the geometric principles that lie at the core of each skill. Skills covered in this course range from techniques of hand drafting, to generation of 3D computer models, physical model-building, sketching, and diagramming. Weekly lectures and pin-ups address the conventions associated with modes of architectural representation and their capacity to convey ideas. This course is tailored and offered only to first-year M.Arch students.
