Includes audio/video content: AV lectures, AV faculty introductions. This course introduces the theory and the practice of engineering ethics using a multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural approach. Theory includes ethics and philosophy of engineering. Historical cases are taken primarily from the scholarly literatures on engineering ethics, and hypothetical cases are written by students. Each student will write a story by selecting an ancestor or mythic hero as a substitute for a character in a historical case. Students will compare these cases and recommend action. This class examines the relationship between a number of mind-altering substances and cultural processes. We look at the relationship between drugs and such phenomena as poverty, religion, technology, inter-generational conflict, colonialism, and global capitalism. We read about the physiological and psychological effects of these substances -- ranging from alcohol to LSD, cocaine and ecstasy -- and ask why different societies prohibit and sanction different drugs. We examine the use of mind-altering substances in a number of "traditional" societies, and follow the development of a global trade in such substances as sugar, coffee, tea, nicotine, cocaine, and marijuana concurrent with the evolution of global capitalism. Description

This course focuses on methods of digital visualization and communication and their application to planning issues. Lectures will introduce a variety of methods for describing or representing a place and its residents, for simulating changes, for presenting visions of the future, and for engaging multiple actors in the process of guiding action. Through a series of laboratory exercises, students will apply these methods in the construction of a web-based portfolio. The portfolio is not only the final project for the course, but will serve as a container for other course work throughout the MCP program. This course addresses advanced topics in structures, exterior envelopes and contemporary production technologies. It continues the exploration of structural elements and systems; expanding to include more complex determinant, indeterminate, long-span and high-rise systems. Some of the topics covered include reinforced concrete, steel and engineered wood design, and an introduction to tensile systems. The contemporary exterior envelope is discussed with an emphasis on the classification of systems, their performance attributes and advanced manufacturing technologies. This course is the second of two graduate structures courses, the first of which is 4.462. They offer an expanded version of the content presented in the undergraduate course, 4.440. This course addresses advanced topics in structures, exterior envelopes and contemporary production technologies. This Freshman Seminar investigates why similar shapes occur in so many natural things and how physics changes the shape of nature. Why are things in nature shaped the way they are? How do birds fly? Why do bird nests look the way they do? How do woodpeckers peck? Why can't trees grow taller than they are? Why is grass skinny and hollow? What is the wood science behind musical instruments? Questions such as these are the subject of biomimetic research and they have been the focus of investigation in this course for the past three years. This course provides an introduction to the study of environmental phenomena that exhibit both organized structure and wide variability—i.e., complexity. Through focused study of a variety of physical, biological, and chemical problems in conjunction with theoretical models, we learn a series of lessons with wide applicability to understanding the structure and organization of the natural world. Students also learn how to construct minimal mathematical, physical, and computational models that provide informative answers to precise questions. This course is appropriate for advanced undergraduates. Beginning graduate students are encouraged to register for 12.586 (graduate version of 12.086). Students taking the graduate version complete different assignments. Description

This course introduces the fundamentals of machine tool and computer tool use. Students work with a variety of machine tools including the bandsaw, milling machine, and lathe. Instruction given on MATLAB®, MAPLE®, XESS™, and CAD. Emphasis is on problem solving, not programming or algorithmic development. Assignments are project-oriented relating to mechanical engineering topics. It is recommended that students take this subject in the first IAP after declaring the major in Mechanical Engineering. This course was co-created by Prof. Douglas Hart and Dr. Kevin Otto.

Name: Angelo Reciti Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 18 April 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-69-Angelo Reciti The Shields Daily News for 19 April 1905 reports: "ALLEGE USE OF THREATS AT NORTH SHIELDS. HUSBAND AND WIFE CASE. At North Shields Police Court today, Angelo Reciti (29), residing at 8 Clive Street, was charged on a warrant with unlawfully using threats towards his wife Elizabeth, whereby she fears he will do her some grievous bodily harm, on the 18th inst. Sergt. Geo. Murray spoke to apprehending the accused about a quarter past eleven o'clock last night. In pursuance of a warrant, he proceeded to 64 Elsdon Street and there found the accused concealed under a bed. He got him out and he thereupon became very violent. Witness had to get the assistance of two other police officers to hold him. The wife of the the prisoner had been obliged to leave the town in consequence of his threats towards her. At present she was staying in Jarrow. The accused was remanded until tomorrow to give his wife an opportunity of attending the court". This wasn't the first time that the Magistrates had become involved in Angelo and Elizabeth Reciti's marital disputes. The Shields Daily Gazette for 26 October 1904 reported: "At North Shields to-day Angelo Reciti, Italian shoemaker, was charged with deserting his wife Elizabeth. Mr G.W. Chapman defended. Complainant, who is only 16, said they had been married since March and resided at Camden Terrace. On Saturday last, at defendant's request, she went to visit her mother at Jarrow, and on returning in the evening she found nothing but the four walls. The defendant had removed all her furniture and her clothing. She was a present living at 57 Church Way. By Mr Chapman: She admitted having declined to live with her husband if he removed into Clive Street. Defendant said that five or six weeks ago he went to Manchester in search of employment and when he returned he discovered that his wife had sold off the furniture and gone to live with her mother. He wished to go into Clive Street for convenience in his business, and when he spoke to his wife about removing she declined to go with him. The magistrates granted a judicial separation, the defendant to pay his wife 5s a week. Defendant was also charged with threatening the life of his wife's sister and was bound over to keep the peace for six months". This course covers topics on the engineering of computer software and hardware systems: techniques for controlling complexity; strong modularity using client-server design, virtual memory, and threads; networks; atomicity and coordination of parallel activities; recovery and reliability; privacy, security, and encryption; and impact of computer systems on society. We will also look at case studies of working systems and readings from the current literature provide comparisons and contrasts, and do two design projects. This course covers topics on the engineering of computer software and hardware systems: techniques for controlling complexity; strong modularity using client-server design, virtual memory, and threads; networks; atomicity and coordination of parallel activities; recovery and reliability; privacy, security, and encryption; and impact of computer systems on society. We will also look at case studies of working systems and readings from the current literature provide comparisons and contrasts, and do two design projects. Students engage in extensive written communication exercises. Enrollment may be limited. The electronic digital computer was invented to do science, and its applications range from physics to mathematics to biology to the humanities. What has been the impact of computing on the practice of science? Is the computer different from other scientific instruments? Is computer simulation a valid form of scientific experiment? Can computer models be viewed as surrogate theories? How does the computer change the way scientists approach the notions of proof, expertise, and discovery? The Core Mantle Boundary (CMB) represents one of the most important physical and chemical discontinuities of the deep Earth as it separates the solid state, convective lower mantle from the liquid outer core. In this seminar course, the instructors will examine our current understanding of the CMB region from integrated seismological, mineral physics and geodynamical perspectives. Instructors will also introduce state-of-the-art methodologies that are employed to characterize the CMB region and relevant papers will be discussed in class. Description

Unloading animals at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, July 1949 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/3176S). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region?s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. Aim is to analyze important current events for what they reveal about the nature and working of our technological world. Starting point is connection between technology and terrorism. Subject also explores how a human-built world can foster insecurity and danger, and how human beings respond. Many invited guests help develop a strong interdisciplinary approach (science, engineering, social science, humanities).
