Description

This class surveys developmental entrepreneurship via case examples of both successful and failed businesses and generally grapples with deploying and diffusing products and services through entrepreneurial action. By drawing on live and historical cases, especially from South Asia, Africa, Latin America as well as Eastern Europe, China, and other developing regions, we seek to cover the broad spectrum of challenges and opportunities facing developmental entrepreneurs. Finally, we explore a range of established and emerging business models as well as new business opportunities enabled by developmental technologies developed in MIT labs and beyond. This course surveys a variety of reasoning, optimization, and decision-making methodologies for creating highly autonomous systems and decision support aids. The focus is on principles, algorithms, and their applications, taken from the disciplines of artificial intelligence and operations research. Reasoning paradigms include logic and deduction, heuristic and constraint-based search, model-based reasoning, planning and execution, reasoning under uncertainty, and machine learning. Optimization paradigms include linear, integer and dynamic programming. Decision-making paradigms include decision theoretic planning, and Markov decision processes. The most recent climate changes (mainly the past 500,000 years, ranging up to about 2 million years ago) will be emphasized. Polishing inside for inspection

Description

Polish inside the shell for inspection at the National Projectile Factory, Birtley, 14 June 1916 (TWAM ref. 1027/271). These images belong to an album of photographs taken in the National Projectile Factory, Birtley (near Gateshead) during the First World War. The photographs were taken by Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, who built the factory. The images date from June 1916, shortly after the factory became operational. What makes the factory (and these photographs of it) so special is that all the management and workers there were Belgian. The factory and the nearby village of Elisabethville (built to accommodate them) were like a little corner of Belgium transplanted to the North East of England. Royal marines passing through Ostend, 1915

Description

Postcard of members of the Royal Marine Light Infantry passing through Ostend, Belgium, 1915 (TWAM ref. 5770). Although the postcard describes the troops simply as British Army one of our volunteers has identified the men as belonging to the Royal Marine Light Infantry. The postcard is addressed to Mrs A. Robson, 58 Chester Road, Sunderland and dated 8 July 1915. 'On Active Service' has been written at the top right corner. The message has been transcribed below exactly as written: ?My Darling Wife, I got your nice cheery letter yesterday afternoon. So you see dear it got here quite soon, but really I thought you should have received far more than that, never mind wait till I set about it your ever loving husband Amos xxxxxxx?. This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. The people, places and events they show can give us an insight into the past, documenting the landscape, the fashions, the way we lived. Some postcards are unused but others tell us something about the people who bought them, through the messages they wrote. They can give us a fascinating glimpse into people?s lives. Name: William Buckham alias Smith Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 27 July 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-75-William Buckham AKA Smith The Shields Daily News for 4 August 1905 reports: "At North Shields Police Court today William Buckham, alias Smith (20), of no fixed abode, was charged with attempting to break and enter a sweet shop on the Grand Parade, Tynemouth, occupied by Messrs Maynard Ltd on the 26th ult. William Harvey, caretaker of the shelter, which adjoins a number of shops, deposed to locking up the premises shortly before 10 o'clock on the night in question and finding next morning that they had been broken into. Annie Nichols, an assistant with Messrs Maynard, said the shop was left secured at one o'clock on the 26th ult. Sergt. Charlton said he saw the accused at 3.30 in the morning leave the public shelter.He accosted him and asked him what he was doing there and he replied that he had just come from Blyth. Witness asked the accused what he had in his pockets and he replied "Nothing". On searching him he found a screw driver and upon inspecting the premises he discovered that the door of a sweet shop had been forced open. There were paint marks on the tool corresponding with the colour of the paint on the door. Prisoner, on being formally charged, pleaded not guilty and said he had nothing to say. He was ordered to take his trial at the next Quarter Sessions". The Shields Daily News for 19 September 1905 reports: ?BREAKING INTO A CAFÉ AT EAST HOWDON. YOUNG MAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. At North Shields Police Court today, William Buckham (20), no fixed abode, 8th appearance, was charged with breaking and entering a café at East Howdon between the 22nd and 23rd July and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigars and cigarettes, a tin of sardines and a tin of salmon valued at £1 10s, the property of Mr H.H. Higginbottom. Mr G.H. Hall, manager of the café, said that on the night of the 22nd July he left the premises secure and upon returning shortly after 10 o?clock next morning, he found they had been broken into. Access had been obtained through the roof. The skylight had been smashed and the thief had lowered himself down into the room below by means of a rope. Witness examined the stock and missed the articles mentioned in the charge, which were valued at £1 10s. Detective Sergt. Scougal put in a letter which had been received by the Chief Constable (Mr J.H. Huish). In this letter, the prisoner, who was in custody on another charge of breaking into a shelter, confessed that he had broken into the café and stolen the goods referred to. Witness charged him and he pleaded guilty. Mr Huish asked the accused if he had written the letter and he replied in the affirmative. The magistrates committed the accused for trial at the Quarter Sessions?. A list of sentences at the Michaelmas Quarter Sessions of the Count of Northumberland was given in the Morpeth Herald of the 21 October 1905. It reports: ?William Buckham (20) on a charge of breaking and entering at Tynemouth, 12 months?. These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK. Each term, the class selects a new set of professional journal articles on bioengineering topics of current research interest. Some papers are chosen because of particular content, others are selected because they illustrate important points of methodology. Each week, one student leads the discussion, evaluating the strengths, weaknesses, and importance of each paper. Subject may be repeated for credit a maximum of four terms. Letter grade given in the last term applies to all accumulated units of 16.459. Coal staithes at Hudson Dock North

Description

View of Hudson Dock North, Sunderland, c1898 (TWAM ref. 238/36). This image is taken from an 'Illustrated Guide to Sunderland and Environs' issued in 1898 by Sunderland Corporation and the River Wear Commissioners. This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region?s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. Description

This course covers the fundamentals of Newtonian mechanics, including kinematics, motion relative to accelerated reference frames, work and energy, impulse and momentum, 2D and 3D rigid body dynamics. The course pays special attention to applications in aerospace engineering including introductory topics in orbital mechanics, flight dynamics, inertial navigation and attitude dynamics. By the end of the semester, students should be able to construct idealized (particle and rigid body) dynamical models and predict model response to applied forces using Newtonian mechanics. They show us why politics matters, and they highlight the consequences of political choices in times of institutional crisis. This course will help you understand why democracies emerge and why they die, from ancient times to the recent wave of democratization in Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, and the developing world. Few things are more dramatic than the collapse of a political system, whether through violent conflict or the peaceful negotiation of new political institutions. Explaining why regimes break down, why new ones emerge, and how these new regimes are consolidated are among the most important questions in political science. MIT Lincoln Laboratory offers this 3-week course in the design, fabrication, and test of a laptop-based radar sensor capable of measuring Doppler, range, and forming synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. You do not have to be a radar engineer but it helps if you are interested in any of the following; electronics, amateur radio, physics, or electromagnetics. It is recommended that you have some familiarity with MATLAB®. Teams of three students will receive a radar kit and will attend a total of 5 sessions spanning topics from the fundamentals of radar to SAR imaging.
