Organ Transplant Organ Transplant

Description

Organ transplant became clinically available in 1980s along with development of operative skills and immunosuppression, which had been experimental medicine. In Kyoto University, we started living liver transplant program in 1990 and the number of transplantation increased over 1000 cases in 2004 which means the largest and best program in the world. We have also developed living donor small bowel transplant and living donor pancreas islet transplant. A lot of useful information which has been found in our large experience is opened to the world. Many physicians and surgeons visited us from all over the world to learn our skills, knowledge, and philosophy and started new programs at their home hospitals. Ward C1, 1st Northern General Hospital during the First World War was housed in what is now the Hatton Gallery

Description

During the First World War the building that now houses the Hatton Gallery was requisitioned to house the 1st Northern General Hospital. This was normal practice throughout the war years, as army hospitals were needed across the country and on a large scale. The Fine Art building in which you are now standing was then part of Armstrong College, Durham University. The hospital was staffed by students and staff with an association to the university, which of course included a Medical School. In 1914 the hospital had 420 beds but by 1917 this number had risen to 2,166. Over the course of the war the hospital took in at least 41,896 servicemen. Mental Health: Violence and safety

Description

The vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent. However, violent incidents do occur for a variety of reasons in psychiatric hospitals as well as in general hospitals. It is therefore important for all doctors to be familiar with the reasons why their patients may become violent. We need to know how to prevent incidents from occurring - and when prevention fails, we need to know how to manage violent patients safely and effectively.
