Government of the UK and Ireland

Description

The module is designed to provoke thought, challenge preconceptions, stimulate questions about the nature of government in the UK and Ireland. Thus, it considers key concepts such as political culture, socialisation, devolution, and governance. This module aims to provoke thought, challenge preconceptions, stimulate questions and to nourish inquisitive minds more than to provide a set diet of ready-made `answers'. Archaeology of Medieval and Tudor Britain

Description

The aim of this course is to provide a broad understanding of the archaeology of Britain in the period c. 1066-1600. Although the bulk of the material will relate to England and Wales, occasional reference will be made to Scotland and Ireland. The course takes a necessarily broad approach to the archaeology of the period. Although the treatment of excavated data will form an important component of the syllabus, other types of evidence will also be considered. For instance, the course will examine the architecture of monasteries and parish churches, consider the Bayeaux Tapestry as a critical source for the interpretation of Norman castles, and stress the importance of the English landscape as an historical document.

The Viking Age Scotland and the Irish Sea Provinces

Description

Viking warriors from Scandinavia began to attack the coasts of western Europe towards the end of the eighth century. Christian writers registered their shock and horror at these raids by pagans upon monasteries, churches and royal sites. The raiders were mobile, using highly manoeuvrable light-weight sailing ships, which could also be rowed. They caught te armies of the Christian kingdoms unprepared, lacking the organisation to deal with them effectively. But there was much more to the Vikings than mere raiding for portable wealth, which in any case had been a regular activity in European societies for sometime.
