Description

This paper examines uncertainty of outcome within the context of international sporting competition through analysing the ratio of medal winning to participating nations for the history of the Summer Olympics. A deficiency within the economics of professional team sports literature concerns the investigation into the determinants of uncertainty per se, although it has prominently featured as an explanatory factor in demand studies. Additionally, previous research on the Olympics has primarily focused upon ';success' in terms of medals won or event placings. An analysis of outcome uncertainty is poignant to the Olympics given the degree of national prestige frequently placed upon success together with the policy debate in relation to their increasing scope. The relationship examined betwe

The Medals of Arras

Description

There is no easy way to compare medals across different armed forces - they remain distinct entities without comparison. Harry Cator won a VC and a Croix du Guerre for his actions at Arras, but the majority of medals awarded are for Commonwealth forces - the awards for German forces are primarily for generals - the Iron Cross is awarded more often, and is perhaps, more akin to the military medal

Taking a break from the War

Description

View of HMS Turbulent under construction at the Hebburn shipyard of Hawthorn Leslie, 5 June 1915 (TWAM ref. 4471/3). A great view of three shipyard workers taking a well deserved break. HMS Turbulent was a Talisman Class destroyer launched by Hawthorn Leslie on 5 January 1916. She was sunk on 1 June 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. A list of those on board who lost their lives can be found here www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/jutland/hms_turbul.... The Rivers Tyne and Wear were responsible for building many vessels, which served Britain during the First World War. This set remembers some of those warships that took part in the Battle of Jutland from 31 May to 1 June 1916. During the battle over 6,000 British sailors lost their lives and 14 Royal Naval vessels were sunk. The losses included the battlecruisers HMS Queen Mary and HMS Invincible, as well as the destroyers HMS Shark, HMS Sparrowhawk and HMS Turbulent, all built on Tyneside. Their memory lives on.
