Playing in the Sand

Description

This is a photograph of young children playing in the sand, South Shields, August 1950. Reference: DT.TUR/2/5197AA This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/. A Blog on this collection of images can be read here (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. The President comes to Washington

Description

This is a photograph documenting the visit of President Jimmy Carter, accompanied by Prime Minister James Callaghan to Washington, UK. The visit took place on the 6th of May 1977. Here we see the President given a commemorative Miners Lamp from a member of the Local Brass Band. Reference: 5417/286/6 This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013. The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington. However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community. These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs. For more information on the Washington Heritage Festival, 21st September 2013 please click here. (Copyright) These images are Crown Copyright. Hebburn Cemetery

Description

This is a photograph of the Memorial In Hebburn Cemetery to the officers and Men of HMS Kelly who lost their lives off the German Minefields in the North Sea 9th May 1940 and at Crete 23rd May 1941. Reference: 2931-43-06 This image is taken from an album produced by the world famous shipbuilding and engineering firm of Hawthorn Leslie. The album gives us a fascinating glimpse of life at the company's shipyard at Hebburn from the late 1930s to the 1960s. There are remarkable images of the men at work in the yard and a poignant series showing the terrible damage caused during the Second World War to HMS Kelly, one of Hawthorn Leslie's best loved ships. This particular collection of images follows the Birth and ultimate Death of a ship. From the craft and pride in its production and the joy in its performance, to the devastation and price of its destruction. A blog about this fascinating collection can been viewed here on the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums website.
