Learning to Groove is an audio resource telling the story of the Tomorrow’s Warriors band as its young musicians learn the art of jazz. Jason Toynbee, leader of the What Is Black British Jazz research project at The Open University explains how this informal type of music education is playing an important and alternative role. Jazz musician Gary Crosby and his partner Janine Irons share their story of how they set up the band and why they feel so passionate about giving opportunities to inner city children to learn how to play jazz and to guide them on their way to future success in the music industry. We also hear personal stories from members of the Tomorrow’s Warriors projects, who share their love of jazz and the importance of getting in the groove. This resource is available as anSubjects

License

See all metadataOur series on the Scottish referendum: things to keep in mind for tomorrow
Description
In advance of the vote tomorrow, which will decide the fate of the three-centuries-old voluntary union between Scotland and England, the outcome is far from a foregone conclusion. The Politics in Spires blog series ‘A Separate or United Kingdom’ has attempted to contribute to an expanded discussion of the independence debate with voices from across the social sciences, including law, economics, sociology, psychology, human geography, political philosophy, and more. Much of the popular discussion has centred on the fiscal and economic consequences of separation. Prof Simon Wren-Lewis agrees with the UK Treasury that in the next decade, at least, Scottish people ‘will be significantly better off by staying in the Union’.Wren-Lewis warns that independence would involve high set-up cosLicense

'How can we deal with our environment in a sustainable way?' The answer to this question is not easy to give. We are faced with all kinds of challenges related to a changing climate: how to build our houses and cities in a sustainable and climate proof way, how to ensure the safety of low lying areas like delta's, how to cope with greenhouse gasses. Delft engineers and scientists approach these issues in many different ways and from many different angles. Within the projects of Delft Environment Initiative we bring together their expertise - combined with that of our partners - and strive to provide integrated answers to the challenges facing society today, and tomorrow.License

See all metadata’s Tomorrows – What Happened to the Future of Government?
Description
Christopher Hood and Ruth Dixon explain the results of their recent project aiming to assess the effects of successive efforts to reform the executive government (the ‘state machine’) of the UK over the past thirty years. This project explores how those reforms played out, and how far they delivered on what had been claimed and expected of them. How much ‘leaner and meaner’ was the state machine after a generation of such changes? Such an exploration is not only an interesting study in its own right; it is also significant for assessing the prospects for the future of government in the coming decades, for example in assessing how government changed in the periods of cutbacks in the 1980s and early 1990s in the context of what is likely to be a period of prolonged fiscalLicense

The Internet is the nervous system of the 21st century. Everything we do today involves the Internet and everything we do tomorrow will require it. Description
Recorded on January 28, 2014. Sarah E. Eichorn, Ph.D. Modern technologies are rapidly changing our instructional capabilities. The millennial students are inundated with engaging technologies in their social lives and are clamoring for similar engagement in their academic courses. I will share with you several innovative mathematics instruction initiatives being done at UCI to exploit these new technological capabilities and appeal to these millennial learners. The projects include: Calculus course coordination, online Pre-Calculus course, flipped class instruction (interchanging the lecture and the homework), Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Algebra and Pre-Calculus, and public course on "Society, Science, Survival: Lesson's from AMC's The Walking Dead". Come learn about these teaching innovations, their implementation, and the assessment of the impact on student learning. We will also discuss future directions and what tomorrow's college math course might look like.License
