2.003 Modeling Dynamics and Control I (MIT)

Description

This course is the first of a two term sequence in modeling, analysis and control of dynamic systems. The various topics covered are as follows: mechanical translation, uniaxial rotation, electrical circuits and their coupling via levers, gears and electro-mechanical devices, analytical and computational solution of linear differential equations, state-determined systems, Laplace transforms, transfer functions, frequency response, Bode plots, vibrations, modal analysis, open- and closed-loop control, instability, time-domain controller design, and introduction to frequency-domain control design techniques. Case studies of engineering applications are also covered.

21M.734 Design For the Theater - Scenery (MIT)

Description

This course examines scenic design as practiced currently and historically, including the use of performance space in western and other cultures, and the audience-performer relationship. Four plays and/or one act operas are designed, accompanied by a study of the social, political and artistic conditions attendant upon their creation and their relevance to a modern audience. Students develop, present and orally defend designs in a variety of two- and three-dimensional media in open studio with an eye to developing a self-critical ability. The final project is a fifth design of the student's choice, consisting of a written concept statement, script analysis and a colored model or renderings.

2.154 Maneuvering and Control of Surface and Underwater Vehicles (13.49) (MIT)

Description

This course is about maneuvering motions of surface and underwater vehicles. Topics covered include: derivation of equations of motion, hydrodynamic coefficients, memory effects, linear and nonlinear forms of the equations of motion, control surfaces modeling and design, engine, propulsor, and transmission systems modeling and simulation during maneuvering. The course also deals with stability of motion, principles of multivariable automatic control, optimal control, Kalman filtering, and loop transfer recovery. We will also explore applications chosen from autopilots for surface vehicles; towing in open seas; and remotely operated vehicles. This course was originally offered in Course 13 (Department of Ocean Engineering) as 13.49. In 2005, ocean engineering subjects became part of Co

6.0002 Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science (MIT)

Description

6.0002 is the continuation of 6.0001 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python and is intended for students with little or no programming experience. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the role computation can play in solving problems and to help students, regardless of their major, feel justifiably confident of their ability to write small programs that allow them to accomplish useful goals. The class uses the Python 3.5 programming language.

11.014J American Urban History II (MIT) 11.014J American Urban History II (MIT)

Description

This is a seminar course that explores the history of selected features of the physical environment of urban America. Among the features considered are parks, cemeteries, tenements, suburbs, zoos, skyscrapers, department stores, supermarkets, and amusement parks. The course gives students experience in working with primary documentation sources through its selection of readings and class discussions. Students then have the opportunity to apply this experience by researching their own historical questions and writing a term paper. Upper balcony foyer at the Paramount Theatre, Newcastle

Description

View of the upper balcony foyer at the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon?s luxurious dťcor made it one of the country?s finest cinemas and arguably the North East?s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building?s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society. STS.436 Cold War Science (MIT) STS.436 Cold War Science (MIT)

Description

This seminar examines the history and legacy of the Cold War on American science. It explores scientist's new political roles after World War II, ranging from elite policy makers in the nuclear age to victims of domestic anti Communism. It also examines the changing institutions in which the physical sciences and social sciences were conducted during the postwar decades, investigating possible epistemic effects on forms of knowledge. The subject closes by considering the place of science in the post-Cold War era. This seminar examines the history and legacy of the Cold War on American science. 6.370 The Battlecode Programming Competition (MIT) 6.370 The Battlecode Programming Competition (MIT)

Description

Includes audio/video content: AV lectures. This course is conducted as an artificial intelligence programming contest in Java. Students work in teams to program virtual robots to play Battlecode, a real-time strategy game. Optional lectures are provided on topics and programming practices relevant to the game, and students learn and improve their programming skills experientially. The competition culminates in a live Battlecode tournament. This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.
