Functional analysis 2010 Functional analysis 2010

Description

This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught Autumn semester 2010. Functional analysis begins with a marriage of linear algebra and metric topology. These work together in a highly effective way to elucidate problems arising from differential equations. Solutions are sought in an infinite dimensional space of functions. This module paves the way by establishing the principal theorems (all due in part to the great Polish mathematician Stefan Banach) and exploring their diverse consequences. Topics to be covered will include: – norm topology and topological isomorphism; – boundedness of operators; – compactness and finite dimensionality; – extension of functionals; – weak*-compactness; – sequence spaces and duality; – bas This is a module framework. How and why we do mathematical proofs How and why we do mathematical proofs

It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught in Autumn Semester 2009/10 The aim of this short unit is to motivate students to understand why we might want to do proofs (why proofs are important and how they can help us) and to help students with some of the relatively routine aspects of doing proofs. In particular, the student will learn the following: * proofs can help you to really see why a result is true; * problems that are easy to state can be hard to solve (e.g. Fermat's Last Theorem); * sometimes statements which appear to be intuitively obvious may turn out to be false (e.g. Simpson's paradox); * the answer to a question will often depend crucially on the definitions you are working with; * how to start proofs; * ho This is a module framework. Ontologies and Semantic Web (2012) Ontologies and Semantic Web (2012)

Description

The aim of this module is to provide the theoretical and practical scientific, methodological and technology basis involved in building ontology, which will be used in building applications that integrate, combine and deduce distributed and heterogeneous information. In particular, we will present: the concepts of ontology and annotation in the context of Semantic Web and corporate semantics, the fundamental theory and best-known ontologies; languages RDF(S) and OWL, the methodologies, methods and techniques used in its building that include guidelines for identifying the life-cycle, specification, planning, conceptualisation, correspondences, reuse, reengineering, etc.; methods and techniques for the annotation of resources and significant applications. Planning in the public domain: From knowledge to action Planning in the public domain: From knowledge to action

Description

The course deals with real case studies on planning models to address issues related to the processes and the potential steps to be taken to improve the competency elements. It relates a series of interconnected actions and activities that can be carried out to achieve a number of specific outcomes on applied research about planning in the public domain. These processes have clear dependency with others that are mentioned in other subjects of this Master Course. Description

Fe, C 0.5 (wt%) steel, near a decarburised surface

Description

This is a hypoeutectoid steel (one that has a carbon composition below that of the eutectoid). During original cooling from high temperature, some ferrite was formed first on the prior austenite grain boundaries and the remaining carbon-enriched austenite then transformed to pearlite in a eutectoid reaction. The specimen was then exposed to a decarburising atmosphere (just air in this case). This might happen inadvertently, or it could be done deliberately if a softer surface is required for some reason. Material near the top of the micrograph, which was close to the free surface, is depleted in carbon and has become almost entirely ferritic. The depth to which there is significant carbon depletion depends on the time and temperature of the decarburisation treatment. It is given approxima

Carbon nanotubes

Description

It is necessary to form a stable dispersion of nanotubes in order to properly integrate them into polymeric systems. This can be achieved by treating them with acid to oxidise the tube surfaces. The tubes will then spontaneously disperse in an aqueous medium. The viscosity of these suspensions is analogous to that of polymers; it increases gradually with concentration up to a critical point (at about 0.7 vol%) where entanglement occurs. However, their separation is determined more by surface repulsions than by entropy arising from chain flexibility. Their stiffness suggests that parallel clusters might be a natural state for aggregation but it also means that any deviations form straightness of the tubes (due to defects) will compromise significant tube parallelism. SEM image of open cell polyurethane foam

Description

If a gas is injected into a liquid it forms a cellular foam structure. When a thermoset prepolymer of low viscosity is foamed, the polymer can drain from the cell walls (driven by surface tension) before it sets at the cell edges, leaving an open-celled foam. The cell edges have three concave sides, giving rise to the tri-cuspid cross section visible at the bottom of this image. The average co-ordination number for the nodes (where struts meet) is four, giving tetrahedral junctions.

When a thermoset prepolymer of low viscosity is foamed, the polymer can drain from the cell walls (driven by surface tension) before it sets at the cell edges, leaving an open-celled foam. The cell edges have three concave sides, and some remnants of collapsed cell walls can be seen at the cell edges.

X-ray tomography image of open cell polyurethane foam

Description

If a gas is injected into a liquid it forms a cellular foam structure. When a thermoset prepolymer of low viscosity is foamed, the polymer can drain from the cell walls (driven by surface tension) before it sets at the cell edges, leaving an open-celled foam. The cell edges have three concave sides. The average co-ordination number for the nodes (where struts meet) is four, giving tetrahedral junctions. The deformation behaviour of the foam was observed by X-ray microtomography at the ESRF in Grenoble. X-ray tomography overcomes the limitations of MRI in terms of contrast, and those of confocal optical microscopy in terms of depth of field.
