Description

This course is about both the design and execution of human resource management strategies. This course has two central themes: (1) How to think systematically and strategically about aspects of managing the organization's human assets, and (2) What really needs to be done to implement these policies and to achieve competitive advantage. It adopts the perspective of a general manager and addresses human resource topics (including reward systems, performance management, high-performance human resource systems, training and development, recruitment, retention, equal employment opportunity laws, work-force diversity, and union-management relationships) from a strategic perspective. Natural resources are pivotal in international politics. They create patterns of cooperation, dependencies and alter balances of power. The battle for resource is most commonly associated with energy resources such as oil and gas, or base metals indispensible for industries: aluminium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc. The rise and fall of ocean tides result from the combined gravitational pull on water by the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun, which exerts a force on water directed towards the two astronomical bodies. Description

This subject is concerned with quantitative methods for analyzing large-scale water resource problems. Topics covered include the design and management of facilities for river basin development, flood control, water supply, groundwater remediation, and other activities related to water resources. Simulation models and optimization methods are often used to support analyses of water resource problems. In this subject we will be constructing simulation models with the MATLAB® programming language and solving numerical optimization problems with the GAMS optimization package. This subject is concerned with quantitative methods for analyzing large-scale water resource problems. Simulation models and optimization methods are often used to support analyses of water resource problems. In this subject we will be constructing simulation models with the MATLAB® programming language and solving numerical optimization problems with the GAMS optimization package.

The class will explore the obstacles to achieving sustainability; in particular, the difficulties of managing common resources, achieving transboundary pollution control, making tradeoffs between economic and social development needs and environmental resource protection, and harmonizing environmental protection standards. At their core, these problems must be addressed through international or multi-lateral negotiations. We will focus especially on problems of representation and voting, issue linkage, balancing science and politics, and monitoring and enforcement in negotiations of these kinds. We will also examine these issues in light of actual treaty negotiations especially the on-going efforts to implement the Climate Change Convention. The class will operate as a research seminar. Sustainability and Conflict in the Developing World

Description

A CUSA Sustainability Seminar delivered by Renard Sexton on April 13, 2011. Renard Sexton is the Project Coordinator, Fundacion Futuro Latinoamericano (Quito, Ecuador) and is an International Affairs Columnist, FiveThirtyEight (New York Times). There is a growing body of academic, applied and journalistic research that points to a strong relationship between natural resources and conflict in the developing world. Whether attributed to a 'resource curse' in the case of high value, extractable natural resources, or 'scarcity and competition' over water, land, fisheries and other resources, it is clear that natural resources and the environment, because of their importance to human survival, are an important contributor to and victim of violent conflict. While there are many strategies for analyzing and transforming these sorts of conflicts in the short and medium term, such as negotiations and settlements over specific resources, external interventions that award control over resources, international boycotts of resources funding conflict, etc., sustainability and sustainable development have emerged as a potential key aspect of long term strategies. This talk will analyze, at a very practical level as well as in theory, where this has been and could be successful and where it will likely fall short.

Description

This course provides fundamental economic understanding on resource issues. The course covers various resources including depletable resources and renewable resources such as fishery and forest. Several economic rules will be studied for optimally managing these resources. Main concerns on resource economics is to achieve efficiency and sustainability. This seminar will explore the difficulties of getting agreement on global definitions of sustainability; in particularly building international support for efforts to combat climate change created by greenhouse gas emissions as well as other international resource management efforts. We will focus on possible changes in the way global environmental agreements are formulated and implemented, especially on ways of shifting from the current "pollution control" approach to combating climate change to a more comprehensive strategy for taking advantage of sustainable development opportunities.
