Description

This unit is designed to give you an understanding of the development of the retail industry in the UK and how it operates within a dynamic environment. Section 1 examines the value of retailing to the UK economy and how it has developed over the last 40 years. Theories of retail change are identified, the development of IT in retailing and the dominance of the retail sector by multiple retailers are analysed. Section 2 is concerned with the different types of retail organisations that exist and how they use the elements of the retail marketing mix to gain an advantage over their competitors. The relevance and importance of market segmentation, targeting and positioning is studied to provide an insight into how retailers focus upon key groups of customers. Emphasis will be placed on downtown as an idea, place, and cluster of interests; on the changing character of downtown; and on recent efforts to rebuild it. Subjects to be considered will include subways, skyscrapers, highways, urban renewal, and retail centers. The focus will be on readings, discussions, and individual research projects. International Retail Design

Description

The aim of this module is to develop understanding of effective retail design. Within this module students will be presented with and investigate the theories behind retail design, operational planning and promotional displays. Students will critically analyse a Salon/Spa’s current retail area, by implementing the theories researched. Students will produce detailed design plans of a new retail area and design a promotion for the Salon/Spa supported with the rational behind it.

An exploration of the extent to which open innovation is transferable to the retail industry.

Description

The objective of this dissertation is to explore the open innovation paradigm in the context of the retail industry. Open innovation is an emergent concept and has not been as widely researched as other theories in the field of business management. The main idea behind the model is to accelerate the innovation process by acquiring knowledge from external sources, as well as commercialising internal ideas outside the boundaries of the firm. While much of the existing literature applies the model to research-intensive industries, limited research has been conducted to study the concept within the scope of retailing.
