Manoeuvring prefabricated sections at Readhead's shipyard

DT.TUR/2/34872C). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East?s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead?s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ?x? lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. Manufacturing Pom Pom guns at the Scotswood Works

Description

Pom Pom Metadyne Guns under construction in 22 Shop, Scotswood Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, 23 October 1942 (TWAM ref. DX1529/1). ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. The Shell Department at the Elswick Works

Description

Gauging 4.2 inch trench mortar bombs in the Shell Department, Elswick Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2 December 1942 (TWAM ref. DX1529/1). ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. Launch party of HMS Zulu

Description

Launch party of HMS Zulu, launched by the shipyard of Hawthorn Leslie, 16 September 1909 (TWAM ref. 4923/1). All the people in the photo look like they need cheering up! HMS Zulu was a Tribal Class destroyer. In late 1916 her stern was sunk by a a German mine. However, her bow was salvaged and attached to the stern of HMS Nubian (whose bow had been destroyer by a German torpedo) to create a new destroyer HMS Zubian. The shipyard of R. & W. Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn built many fine warships. During the First World War the firm built 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyer leaders and 25 torpedo boat destroyers. The firm also built machinery and boilers for 2 battleships, and a further 3 light cruisers. These and other warships built by Hawthorn Leslie before the War, are remembered in this set. There are remarkable images of warships under construction at Hebburn, as well as fascinating shots of the people who attended the launches. The set also contains majestic views of the ships at sea. The images are not only a testimony to the skill of those who designed and built these ships but also to the courage of those who sailed in them. Description

Aerial view of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels site, before the start of the project. The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. These two purpose-built tunnels were designed to connect Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside under the river Tyne. View from Newcastle Swing Bridge, 1976

View of the Tyne Bridge and Newcastle Quayside, taken from the Swing Bridge, Newacstle upon Tyne, November 1976 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/CN10368A). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century.
