The Shields Daily News for 12 July 1916 reports: ?STOLEN DRESSES. DURHAM GIRLS IN TROUBLE AT NORTH SHIELDS. Before Ald. Spencer and Mr J.B. Williamson, at North Shields today, Wilhelmina Armstrong, 18, single, 13 Summerville, Durham, City and Christina Austin, 17, single, 1 Lambton Walk, Durham City, were charged on remand with having stolen two dresses, valued at 1, from the Wardrobe shop of Lottie Cooper Rudyerd Street. Prosecutrix stated that on the afternoon of the 6th inst. the two girls called at her shop and asked to be shown some frocks. They remained in the shop about half and hour and then left, saying they would return four days later. On looking through her stock after the girls had gone, she missed a dress and gave information to the police. The girls returned on the 10th and she sent for the police, who arrested them. Later in the same day she was also shown by the police another dress, which she also identified as her property. Detective Mason said he arrested the accused on the 10th and questioned Armstrong about a dress she had been wearing at South Shields the previous day. She admitted having stolen it from the shop of the prosecutrix and on the way to the police station, Austin said she had also stolen a dress. Afterwards he went to the house in which they had been lodging at Whitley and there recovered the two dresses. Both girls pleaded guilty and said they were sorry. Austin said she had never done anything of the kind before. Armstrong admitted having been convicted at Darlington in April, the fine being paid by her father, who is a butcher at Durham. Mrs Austin said her daughter left home a week ago. Armstrong was fined 19s 6d, with the alternative of 14 days imprisonment. The bench considered that Austin had been led astray to some extent and she was bound over in the sum of 5, to be of good behaviour for 12 months?. These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn?t record the details of each prisoner?s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ?Shields Daily News? looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time. The course focuses on the problem of supervised learning within the framework of Statistical Learning Theory. It starts with a review of classical statistical techniques, including Regularization Theory in RKHS for multivariate function approximation from sparse data. Next, VC theory is discussed in detail and used to justify classification and regression techniques such as Regularization Networks and Support Vector Machines. Linking Social and Ecological Determinants to Public Health

Description

A public health seminar recorded on April 4, 2011. Full title of Lecture: "Linking Social and Ecological Determinants to Public Health: Case Studies of Disparities in Conservation and Development in Costa Rica," delivered by Bernardo Aguilar-Gonzalez. For decades Costa Rica has enjoyed a "Green Republic" and exemplary democracy reputation with recognitions as the happiest and most sustainable country in the world. This has marked it as an exceptional nation in Mesoamerica, attracting substantial attention from the scientific community and high visitation rates from tourists. Effectively, this reputation is the result of one of the most ambitious attempts to establish a bioregional conservation area system, a progressive approach to environmental regulation and the social results of the welfare state, which prevailed as a development model between 1948 and the early 1980s. This welfare state includes one of the most reputable social medicine systems in our hemisphere. Yet, during the last 30 years it becomes obvious that the efforts of conservation have been focused mostly in rural areas, while poorly planned economic growth concentrates mostly in urban areas in the center of Costa Rica. Further, large-scale foreign investments are favored by government authorities to promote development in rural areas that are close to protected areas. This leads to two realities: One where environmental conflicts abound and development is restricted leading to higher migration rates and lower social and health indicators and another one which has significant urban environmental problems aside higher economic and social/health indicators. Will Costa Rica live up to its enlightened reputation? This question opens very interesting venues of research and work for academics and students interested in areas such as Public Health, Political Ecology, Environmental Sociology, Ecological Economics and Latin American Studies. The presentation will critically describe four case studies that illustrate the diagnosis in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Central Valley and Northeastern Costa Rica which involve Neotropica Foundation's work, hoping to attract interest for further involvement of University of California, Irvine through the creation of course and research opportunities.

In this seminar Jay G. Blumler discusses the origins and sources of the appeal of the 'uses and gratifications' paradigm. Is the active audience an article of faith or an empirical question? Empirical and quantifiable measurement of gratifications sought or obtained from consumption of a wide range of media materials proves to have been remarkably easy and productive when undertaken properly. After reviewing the principal conceptual framework of the 'uses and gratifications' paradigm, Jay will provide an overview of the prominent and to some extent recurrent typologies of gratifications sought (or obtained) that have emerged from research in the area. Mawson, Swan & Morgan

Description

This photograph is from the Swan Collection of Tyne & Wear Museums, held at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sir Joseph Wilson Swan was a British Physicist, Chemist and Inventor. Swan lived at Underhill, on Kells Lane North in Low Fell, Gateshead. It was here that he conducted most of his experiments in the large conservatory. His investigations in electro-chemistry led to the construction of a motor electric meter, an electric fire-damp detector, a miners' electric safety lamp. Most importantly, Swan was also a pioneer in photographic procedures such as carbon printing. It was Swan's demonstration of the light bulb at a lecture in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18 December 1878, before its later development by the American Thomas Edison that he is most famous for. Swan and Edison later collaborated in their work with the incandescent light bulb in 1883, when they founded the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company, otherwise known as 'Ediswan.' Many items held at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums relating to Joseph Swan offer an amazing insight in to his work as an inventor and his place in the History of Scientific progression. Goddard: Drivers' attitudes about bicyclists

Description

UC Irvine Public Health Seminar - recorded on May 8, 2017 Drivers' attitudes about bicyclists: roadway norms, implicit bias, and implications for safety Although traffic deaths in the United States have declined since the 1970s, car crashes remain a leading cause of death. Vulnerable road users (VRUs) like bicyclists and pedestrians continue to be injured or killed at rates that outpace their mode share or miles traveled. In the United States, bicyclists are twelve times more likely to be killed in a traffic crash than car occupants. Existing research into crash causation has focused on instrumental factors (e.g. intersection type, vehicle speed) but little research has probed the role of attitudes or socio-cognitive mechanisms in interactions between roadway users. This presentation will highlight the need to understand drivers? attitudes toward bicyclists, and how those attitudes may affect drivers? behavior. The research addresses a largely unexplored area of research, particularly in the United States. Dr. Goddard provides evidence that implicit methods used in psychology deserve consideration by travel behavior researchers. The full research effort represents the most comprehensive exploration to date of United States drivers' attitudes and self-report behaviors toward bicyclists. These attitudes toward bicyclists, and their relationship with self-reported safety-related behaviors, suggest potential educational, legal, programmatic, and infrastructural interventions to improve road safety for vulnerable users, such as bicyclists. Tara Goddard recently earned her PhD in Urban Studies from the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University, where her dissertation research explored drivers? attitudes and behaviors toward bicyclists. She holds a Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Davis, and served from 2007 through 2011 as the Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Davis, CA. Ms. Goddard's research interests include all things transportation safety-related, but in particular, the intersections of transportation and social psychology and their influence on differential experiences and safety outcomes for vulnerable road users.

From there, the Kalman filter is employed to estimate the states of dynamic systems. Concluding topics include conditions for stability of the filter equations. In earlier generations voters were spoiled for choice. Between 1832 and 1885 many had more than one vote in general elections. The British parliament contained county and borough constituencies and these, depending on size, would return two to four MPs with voters able to vote for as many candidates as there were seats to be filled. A recipe for chaos, perhaps, but there were advantages to these multi-member constituencies. For instance, the Liberals could put up a left-wing radical as well as a traditional Whig, thus broadening their appeal to the electorate. [One wonders whether such an approach could appeal ... The British parliament contained county and borough constituencies and these, depending on size, would return two to four MPs with voters able to vote for as many candidates as there were seats to be filled. Description

A whirl-wind tour of the statistics used in behavioral science research, covering topics including: data visualization, building your own null-hypothesis distribution through permutation, useful parametric distributions, the generalized linear model, and model-based analyses more generally. Familiarity with MATLAB®, Octave, or R will be useful, prior experience with statistics will be helpful but is not essential. This course is intended to be a ground-up sketch of a coherent, alternative perspective to the "null-hypothesis significance testing" method for behavioral research (but don't worry if you don't know what this means). Multi-scale systems (MuSS) consist of components from two or more length scales (nano, micro, meso, or macro-scales). In MuSS, the engineering modeling, design principles, and fabrication processes of the components are fundamentally different. The challenge is to make these components so they are conceptually and model-wise compatible with other-scale components with which they interface. This course covers the fundamental properties of scales, design theories, modeling methods and manufacturing issues which must be addressed in these systems. Examples of MuSS include precision instruments, nanomanipulators, fiber optics, micro/nano-photonics, nanorobotics, MEMS (piezoelectric driven manipulators and optics), X-Ray telescopes and carbon nano-tube assemblies. Description

This course uses theoretical models and studies of "old economy" industries to help understand the growth and future of electronic commerce. We will begin with a discussion of relevant topics from industrial organization including monopoly pricing, price discrimination, product differentiation, barriers to entry, network externalities, search and first-mover advantages. The largest part of the course will be a discussion of a number of e-industries. In this section we'll discuss extensions and applications of the ideas from the first part of the course, draw analogies to previous technological revolutions and read current case studies. Finally, we'll discuss two additional topics: bubbles in asset markets and the macroeconomic effects of the Internet.
