HRH Prince Albert visits South Shields

Description

This photograph shows the future King George VI visiting the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields, 16 April 1920 Reference: 1061/1209/2 On 22 November Prince William will be visiting Sunderland and South Tyneside to take part in a number of youth development events. During the visit he will also officially open Haven Point, the new leisure centre in South Shields. To celebrate this Tyne & Wear Archives has produced a short flickr set remembering past royal visits to the region?s shipyards. Most of the visits featured here took place during difficult times and they gave a real boost to public spirits in the face of two World Wars. A short blog relating to these images can be read here . These images are part of the Tyne & Wear Archives Shipyard Collection. In July 2013 the outstanding historical significance of the Collection was recognised by UNESCO through its inscription to the UK Memory of the World Register. The Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1961

Description

View along Newcastle upon Tyne Quayside, June 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/26897A). You can also see the Baltic Flour Mills, Gateshead. Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Launch of the 'British Princess'

Description

This is a photograph of Princess Elizabeth launching the tanker ?British Princess? built by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd, Deptford, 30 April 1946. Reference: DS.LG/4/PH/4/1 pg24 On 22 November Prince William will be visiting Sunderland and South Tyneside to take part in a number of youth development events. Work on the Tyne Bridge arch underway at Gateshead

Description

The first sections of steelwork rise over Hillgate Quay, Gateshead, 10 August 1927 (TWAM ref. 3730/15/2). Most of the girders in this photograph are part of a temporary cradle used to support the first three sections of the bridge's main arch. The Tyne Bridge is one of the North East?s most iconic landmarks. These photographs were taken by James Bacon & Sons of Newcastle and document its construction from March 1927 to October 1928. They belonged to James Geddie, who was Chief Assistant Engineer on the construction of the Bridge with Dorman, Long & Co. Ltd. of Middlesbrough. South Shields and the foreshore

Description

This is an Aerial view of South Shields foreshore, July 1955. Reference: DT.TUR/2/14025F This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/. Gateshead July 1971

Description

The new flats in St Cuthbert?s Village near completion centre left. There are claims that film star Brit Eckland lived in the village ?before she made it big?. Bensham Road runs through the middle of the image. Regent Court, the huge H shaped block of flats, can be seen on High West Street, in the top right quarter. View from Newcastle Central Station

Description

A view of the largest railway crossing in the World, taken from Central Station, Newcastle upon Tyne, c1930 (TWAM ref. DF.ATK/16/1/2). The postcard is unused. This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. The people, places and events they show can give us an insight into the past, documenting the landscape, the fashions, the way we lived. Some postcards are unused but others tell us something about the people who bought them, through the messages they wrote. They can give us a fascinating glimpse into people?s lives.
