OLYMPIC VALUES: Keeping the Amateurs Amateur.

Description

Given the financial clout of professional sport, it is little wonder that many athletes are tempted to turn professional after amateur wins. Boxing is perhaps the clearest example of a sport where athletes are faced with the fundamental amateur v pro debate: do they retain amateur status to live the dream of competing on home soil as Olympic boxers in the London 20102 Games, or take the tempting financial route of lucrative professional contracts and World Championship titles, with the downside of potentially entering the ring too fast than their experience and youth might ideally allow?

PARALYMPIC SPORT: Are We Equal Yet?

Description

This case study considers equality for able-bodied athletes, and athletes/persons with a disability, from a financial point of view. A brief history of the Paralympic Games is presented, before asking readers to consider the differences in funding between a) Olympic and Paralympic sports in general, b) the same sport that is awarded less funding at Paralympic level than at Olympic level, and c) individual Paralympic sports. In order to consider these financial issues, brief contextualisation of the history of the Paralympic Games is necessary.

Nor are the British public known for their expertise in, and enthusiasm for, snow sports such as skiing, slalom, bobsleigh, skeleton or snowboarding. How then, did an English athlete manage to demonstrate a Gold-medal winning performance in the Skeleton event that claimed victory over all of the other great snow sports nations such as Austria, Switzerland, Canada and the US?
