Gender, Interculturalism and Discourses on Women's Leadership in the Olympic Movement

Description

This paper addresses Western discourses relating to the role of women in the leadership of Olympic and elite sporting bodies in two contrasting non-western contexts, namely in selected Muslim countries (i.e. Member States of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference) and in the People's Republic of China. The two cases are selected because they reflect contrasting contexts in which the role of women is seen to be embedded in very different ideologies, often referred to simplistically as a religious, and a political ideology respectively. Berlin in 1936: old and new work on the nazi olympics

Description

No sooner had the Seoul Olympics drawn to their successful conclusion than Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, began preparations to host the Twenty-fourth Games in 1992. The Seoul Olympics were the least beset by political problems in recent times, although the extent to which this was achieved by police surveillance and sympathetic TV producers we can only guess. Like previous games they were a triumph for commercialism and nationalism, but since these have been a normal part of the Olympics for so long now it was the drug issue that rivalled brilliant sporting performances for the headlines.

Genderisation and Sexuality of the Female Olympic Athlete

Description

Clayton (2002) argue that tennis player Anna Kournikova represents the most powerful symbol of genderisation in sport. Such a supposition is interesting as Kournikova, while successful, never really achieved dominance in her game, instead being better recognised in recent years for her modelling and celebrity profile. The image of Kournikova is, no doubt, a sexualised one.

Race and Ethnicity in the Olympic Games

Description

On October 2, 1968, more than 300 students and workers at La Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, Mexico City were gunned down by police, on the order of former President Luis Echeverria. Those that lost their lives were protesting against the staging of the Olympic Games in a country that was struggling with poverty and an endemic lack of funding in vital public services such as education and healthcare.

PARALYMPIC SPORT: Are We Equal Yet?

Description

This case study considers equality for able-bodied athletes, and athletes/persons with a disability, from a financial point of view. A brief history of the Paralympic Games is presented, before asking readers to consider the differences in funding between a) Olympic and Paralympic sports in general, b) the same sport that is awarded less funding at Paralympic level than at Olympic level, and c) individual Paralympic sports. In order to consider these financial issues, brief contextualisation of the history of the Paralympic Games is necessary.
