Assessment observations using broadcasting technology at Angus College

Description

The Business and Social Science team at Angus College facilitate learning from beginners to degree level and are aiming to drive forward the use of broadcast technology to ensure that distance learning students receive the same level of support as those who attend classes. A method was sought to overcome the challenge of observing students completing practical I.T. assessment tasks when studying on a distance learning basis. A pilot was undertaken involving the HNC Administration and I.T. distance learning student group, who were tasked with completing several practical elements of a Database unit, that required tutor observations, and this was achieved using Adobe Connect software that includes a webcam facility to identify students and a screen sharing facility to enable practical task o

Close to the edge

Description

This activity encourages the use of Ordnance Survey maps from Digimap for Colleges to explore the changes that have taken place on the edges of major urban areas, and compare them with other parts of urban areas. There are several traditional ‘urban models’ such as those of Burgess, Hoyt and Harris and Ullman, which will be familiar to many geography students from their GCSE studies. These will be explored using a transect, which will be taken outwards from the centre of a town or city, and passing through different areas. Are the models correct, or are they simplifications? What will students observe as they move outwards?

Server virtualisation at Cardonald College

Description

Most servers that are deployed conventionally on campus only utilise a fraction of their capabilities. The accepted norm it to host one main application per server due to the inherent risk of sharing memory and processors across several mission critical institutional applications. This results in colleges having to host many more servers than they would like in their server rooms, all needing maintained, powered and ultimately replaced. With this in mind Allan Forsyth and Martin Forte investigated a more efficient way of hosting Cardonald servers.

Nintendo Wii at Cumbernauld College

Description

In 2008, Cumbernauld College bought the Nintendo Wii with the Wii Fit balance board and Wii Sports as part of the Healthy Working Lives programme for staff. The intention was to site the Wii Fit permanently in the college staff gym so that staff could use it as part of their exercise programme. For logistical reasons, this wasn’t possible so new uses were found for this equipment.
