Description

The goal of this seminar is to have open discussions of controversial political and social issues and raise awareness of current world events in an informal setting. Discussions for the first part of each class will focus on current events from that week, while in the second part of class students will discuss a scheduled issue in greater detail. Scheduled issues include the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the regulation of marijuana, how our society should punish criminals, genocide in Rwanda and Sudan, discrimination in our society today, the future of social security, whether pornography is sexist, and where we can go from here in the Arab/Israeli Conflict. Discussions will be supplemented by readings, films, and public speakers. This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or dowloaded as a zip file As taught in Autumn Semester 2009/10 The War on Iraq and the US and British invasion of the country in 2003 has led to huge tensions in geopolitics. At the same time, the supposed ‘threat’ of international terrorism and continuing financial turmoil in the world economy have both brought to the fore the global politics of co-operation and confrontation. Whilst it might be possible to agree on the significance of these events, the explanation and/or understanding of them is dependent on prior theoretical choices. The purpose of this module is to make students aware of the diversity of approaches to international theory. Within International Relations (IR) theory there exist highly divergent interpretations This is a module framework. Observing the 1980s

Description

Observing the 1980s brings together archive material from the Mass Observation Project for the period 1981-1990, interviews from the British Library Oral History Collections and a range of contemporary documents from the University of Sussex Library Documents collection. These materials have been used to create an Open Educational Resource, consisting of an undergraduate teaching module, 'Thatcher's Britain: Observing the 1980s', which can be downloaded and used on Moodle, or accessed via a guest login. The resources are hosted at the University of Sussex and are freely available via the website for anyone to use, under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 licence.
