DH3834 Internet: Internet Client Services

Description

This unit is designed to give candidates a broad knowledge of Internet client services and the skills required to set up and provide first line support for a range of Internet client applications. This will include familiarity with the main theoretical concepts, principles and boundaries of the area and with the main terminology. The unit prepares candidates for this role by providing them with the required underpinning knowledge. Current terminology is introduced as appropriate. The unit is primarily intended for candidates studying computing. It would also be relevant to those with appropriate work experience in using the Internet.

La asignatura se centra en el ámbito de las redes de comunicaciones pretendiendo introducir a alumnos no relacionados con estas tecnologías la problemática que debe resolverse para la transmisión de información entre usuarios de la red, así como los distintos tipos de redes existentes y sus características. El curso partirá de los aspectos mas cercanos al usuario, las aplicaciones, para ir introduciendo progresivamente los distintos conceptos asociados a las redes de comunicaciones, centradas en la tecnología IP, motor de la actual Internet. A number of speakers from leading companies in the industry will give course lectures. Description

This class offers students an opportunity to experiment with various forms and practices of cellphone communication and, most importantly, to propose and develop a semester-long project using advanced A780 cellphones donated by Motorola along with access to J2ME™ source code for programming cellphone applications. Class size is limited. Students in small collaborative groups will propose, implement and report on a semester-long project. This course examines representations of race, class, gender, and sexual identity in the media. We will be considering issues of authorship, spectatorship, (audience) and the ways in which various media content (film, television, print journalism, advertising) enables, facilitates, and challenges these social constructions in society. In addition, we will examine how gender and race affects the production of media, and discuss the impact of new media and digital media and how it has transformed access and participation, moving contemporary media users from a traditional position of "readers" to "writers" and/or commentators. This course will consider the ways in which technology, broadly defined, has contributed to the building of American society from colonial times to the present. This course has three primary goals: to train students to ask critical questions of both technology and the broader American culture of which it is a part; to provide an historical perspective with which to frame and address such questions; and to encourage students to be neither blind critics of new technologies, nor blind advocates for technologies in general, but thoughtful and educated participants in the democratic process. This course uses theoretical models and empirical studies to help understand the economics behind various internet businesses. We will begin with a discussion of relevant topics from industrial organization (IO) including monopoly pricing, price discrimination, product differentiation, and barriers to entry. The main part of the course will be a discussion of a number of online businesses. In the context of those businesses, we will discuss extensions and applications of the ideas from the first section of the course. In this talk, Jure discusses how the computational perspective can be applied to questions involving the structure of online networks and the dynamics of information that flow through such networks. With an increasing amount of social interaction taking place online, we are accumulating large amounts of data about phenomena that were once essentially invisible to us: the collective behaviour and social interactions of hundreds of millions of people. Analyzing this data computationally offers enormous potential to address both long-standing scientific questions, and to harness and inform the design of future social computing applications.

This course examines computers anthropologically, as meaningful tools revealing the social and cultural orders that produce them. We read classic texts in computer science along with works analyzing links between machines and culture. We explore early computation theory and capitalist manufacturing; cybernetics and WWII operations research; artificial intelligence and gendered subjectivity; the creation and commodification of the personal computer; the hacking aesthetic; non-Western histories of computing; the growth of the Internet as a military, academic, and commercial project; the politics of identity in cyberspace; and the emergence of "evolutionary" computation. La asignatura Redes Multimedia cubre una temática clave: habiéndose explicado los fundamentos de la arquitectura de la red Internet en asignaturas anteriores, en esta asignatura se aborda el problema específico de emplear dicha red para transmitir contenidos multimedia. Dado que la red Internet fue concebida inicialmente para transmitir datos, su arquitectura no está bien adaptada para los requisitos de las aplicaciones multimedia.
