The Borders Online Learning Transition – BOLT toolkit

Description

The Borders Online Learning Transition (BOLT) project aimed to embed technology enhanced learning as a core function of Borders College. BOLT was an exceptionally ambitious project both in terms of the number of associated work-streams, the training required to upskill the team members to the appropriate levels and the number of staff to be involved and ‘converted’ to the value of e-learning. The project aimed to move technology enhanced learning forward within the College and to capture the journey of the team from inception to becoming a fully embedded College function. The story of this journey is documented in an online toolkit which signposts areas of significant impact, interest and development for others embarking on a similar journey (www.Bolt.ac.uk). The aim of the toolkit is

Border College’s smart use of SmartTables

Description

SmartTables are relatively new on the technology enhanced learning scene but are rapidly becoming popular within Primary Schools. To date the majority of use has been focused on pre- school and primary school aged children, with content being developed to support their learning needs. Until now there has been no attempt to introduce SmartTables in Colleges, despite increasing interest from industry who are keen to use the tables within business environments. Borders College saw the potential for SmartTables to be used within an FE environment and piloted the table in order to investigate its use and effectiveness across the College.

e-PDP implementation using Mahara at Adam Smith College

Description

The college has been delivering Personal Development Plans (PDPs) to the students using paper based handouts, which is an ongoing process that includes self-reflection of their learning, as well as objectives and goals setting. However due to the cost and engagement aspects of producing and using these booklets, the e-learning team and guidance team have collaboratively investigated ways in which the PDPs could be integrated into the curriculum, using some of the current e-learning tools available. http://www.rsc-scotland.org/?p=2101

Assessment observations using broadcasting technology at Angus College

Description

The Business and Social Science team at Angus College facilitate learning from beginners to degree level and are aiming to drive forward the use of broadcast technology to ensure that distance learning students receive the same level of support as those who attend classes. A method was sought to overcome the challenge of observing students completing practical I.T. assessment tasks when studying on a distance learning basis. A pilot was undertaken involving the HNC Administration and I.T. distance learning student group, who were tasked with completing several practical elements of a Database unit, that required tutor observations, and this was achieved using Adobe Connect software that includes a webcam facility to identify students and a screen sharing facility to enable practical task o

Video lessons at Glasgow Clyde College

Description

Glasgow Clyde College Computing lecturer Michael Griffiths wanted to make sure that none of his HNC Multimedia group missed out on key points when learning JavaScript for the SQA module Client Side Scripting. Late-coming and poor attendance had often resulted in students underachieving in the past and he decided that the best way to combat this was to allow the students to watch video demonstrations of the lessons. This was not only to be used by students who had missed the lecture, but also as a revision tool for those who needed to work on the subject outside of class hours.
