7.343 The Radical Consequences of Respiration: Reactive Oxygen Species in Aging and Disease (MIT) 7.343 The Radical Consequences of Respiration: Reactive Oxygen Species in Aging and Disease (MIT)

Description

This course will start with a survey of basic oxygen radical biochemistry followed by a discussion of the mechanisms of action of cellular as well as dietary antioxidants. After considering the normal physiological roles of oxidants, we will examine the effects of elevated ROS and a failure of cellular redox capacity on the rate of organismal and cellular aging as well as on the onset and progression of several major diseases that are often age-related. Topics will include ROS-induced effects on stem cell regeneration, insulin resistance, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. The role of antioxidants in potential therapeutic strategies for modulating ROS levels will also be discussed. This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology D This course will start with a survey of basic oxygen radical biochemistry followed by a discussion of the mechanisms of action of cellular as well as dietary antioxidants. How much of the MLA International Bibliography can be retrieved from, in or through Southampton University Library?

Description

A record of studies undertaken in May 2007 at the University of Southampton. The primary aim was to be able to quote a likely figure for speedy full text retrieval from local resources (in whatever format) which researchers in certain subject areas might expect to achieve when looking through references retrieved using Modern Language Association International Bibliography. By “local resources” were meant any resource available through the University Library system excluding the use of the interlibrary loan service.

Archaeology of Medieval and Tudor Britain

Description

The aim of this course is to provide a broad understanding of the archaeology of Britain in the period c. 1066-1600. Although the bulk of the material will relate to England and Wales, occasional reference will be made to Scotland and Ireland. The course takes a necessarily broad approach to the archaeology of the period. Although the treatment of excavated data will form an important component of the syllabus, other types of evidence will also be considered. For instance, the course will examine the architecture of monasteries and parish churches, consider the Bayeaux Tapestry as a critical source for the interpretation of Norman castles, and stress the importance of the English landscape as an historical document.
