The course considers the growing popularity of sustainability and its implications for the practice of engineering, particularly for the built environment. Two particular methodologies are featured: life cycle assessment (LCA) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The fundamentals of each approach will be presented. Specific topics covered include water and wastewater management, energy use, material selection, and construction. The aim of this module is to introduce students to the concept of ‘sustainability’ as perceived from within the Arts and Humanities, in particular within the disciplines of archaeology, classics, history (including art history and landscape history), music, philosophy and theology. This module considers sustainability with respect to water, food, agriculture, forestry and energy. For each of these elements of sustainability, the module illustrates why their sustainable management is important, given that we are living within finite environmental limits. A novel aspect of the module is that in most sessions you update your own personal blog (or offline document), which can be used to provide a record of your opinions on sustainability, details on your awareness of sustainability, and specific examples of sustainability. The module is assessed by means of producing and presenting a poster at an internal “Sustainability Conference”. Dr Simon Gosling, University of Nottingham. The class will explore the obstacles to achieving sustainability; in particular, the difficulties of managing common resources, achieving transboundary pollution control, making tradeoffs between economic and social development needs and environmental resource protection, and harmonizing environmental protection standards. At their core, these problems must be addressed through international or multi-lateral negotiations. We will focus especially on problems of representation and voting, issue linkage, balancing science and politics, and monitoring and enforcement in negotiations of these kinds. We will also examine these issues in light of actual treaty negotiations especially the on-going efforts to implement the Climate Change Convention. The class will operate as a research seminar. Transport and the Olympic Games

Description

The most precarious aspect of the original London 2012 bid was a perceived inability of London to meet the transport demands of millions of sports tourists, athletes and officials that would be attending the Games.

Description

Climate change and global warming continue to dominate international political discussion, and the discussions of the IOC and host countries are no exception. The upcoming Vancouver 2010, London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Organising Committees are all committed to leaving a legacy that their Games are remembered as being green.

WIDENING PARTICIPATION: The Greenwich Equestrian Controversy

Description

– and royal – opposition – LOCOG have gained approval for the horse riding events and modern pentathlon to be hosted in Greenwich Park. Unsurprisingly, this move has angered many local residents who view the beautifully maintained Park as a hub of local and social activity.
