Using digital assessment booklets to improve learning, teaching and assessment in the creative arts at Ayrshire College

Description

Richard Scott, a Creative Arts Lecturer at Ayrshire College has been looking for ways to improve assessment results by helping students take more control of their learning and engage more with it. He also wanted to find ways to reduce staff time spent on marking, so that they could free up more time for the teaching process. This case study explores an interactive digital assessment booklet he has developed to help address these challenges, how he designed the booklet and the response from students, staff and management to it.

This course explores how scientific information can be used to inform policy decision-making processes through the use of quantitative modeling techniques. It incorporates both hands-on analysis and practice using models as well as evaluation of the use and effectiveness of models in decision-making. The course assesses the full spectrum of model complexity from simple box model calculations to complex, global systems models. Issues addressed include scientific assessment processes; integrated assessment modeling; model frameworks; and scenarios. Examples focus on models and information used for earth system governance, with selected examples from other areas of application. This course explores how scientific information can be used to inform policy decision-making processes through the use of quantitative modeling techniques. Description

The focus of this resource is on assessment for learning and the value for practitioners in reflecting on this concept when planning assessment. The centre of the resource is a PowerPoint presentation with makes reference to materials developed by the ASKe (Assessment Standards Knowledge Exchange) CETL (Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning), introducing the idea of a social constructivist approach to assessment practice. Good Practice Guide in Question and Test Design

Description

This booklet will provide an introduction to good practice in question and test design. It includes the art of using objective tests to assess some aspects of student learning. At the outset you should be aware that objective tests are just one method of assessment. They are useful for assessing knowledge, comprehension and application and in some circumstances can be used to assess higher order skills such as evaluation and synthesis. They cannot be used to assess creativity, integration of ideas and the capacity to develop a sustained argument. Examples in this booklet range widely over a number of subjects and they include mathematical questions written as part of the Computer Aided Learning in Mathematics (CALM) Project at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

Abertay University Assessment Technology Toolkit

Description

This online tool-kit is designed to help University teaching staff to familiarise themselves with the different tools available for assessing online. The toolkit is designed to match available technology to module assessment tasks. It is envisaged that the toolkit should be used early in the module design process so the technology tool is fully embedded and not simply tacked on at the end to handle online marking and feedback.
