18.969 Topics in Geometry: Dirac Geometry (MIT) 18.969 Topics in Geometry: Dirac Geometry (MIT)

Description

This is an introductory (i.e. first year graduate students are welcome and expected) course in generalized geometry, with a special emphasis on Dirac geometry, as developed by Courant, Weinstein, and Severa, as well as generalized complex geometry, as introduced by Hitchin. Dirac geometry is based on the idea of unifying the geometry of a Poisson structure with that of a closed 2-form, whereas generalized complex geometry unifies complex and symplectic geometry. For this reason, the latter is intimately related to the ideas of mirror symmetry. Art of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East

Description

This course serves as an introduction to the major artistic and architectural traditions of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East, and explores how artifacts and monuments can be used to study the history and culture of the ancient world. It is divided into two units that chronologically focus on the art, architecture, and archaeology of each region. The first unit examines Ancient Egyptian tombs, monuments, and art from the Early Dynastic (c. 3100-2650 BCE) through the Roman (30 BCE- 4thcentury CE) periods. The second unit focuses on Ancient Near Eastern artistic and architectural traditions from the late Neolithic (c. 9500-4500 BCE) through the conquest of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (550-330 BCE) by Alexander the Great. This free course may be completed online at any time. See co

Babylonian mathematics

Description

This unit looks at Babylonian mathematics. You will learn how a series of discoveries have enabled historians to decipher stone tablets and study the various techniques the Babylonians used for problem-solving and teaching. The Babylonian problem-solving skills have been described as remarkable and scribes of the time received a trainng far in advance of anything available in medieval Christian Europe 3000 years later.

Turners celebrate the Queen's coronation, 1953

Description

View of Turners' shop on Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, May 1953 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/360). The decorations were in place to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Launch of the 'Eidanger'

Description

View of the tanker ?Eidanger? afloat on the River Wear after launch, built by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd, 1 July 1938 (TWAM ref. DS.LG/4/PH/3/1 pg23). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. The Scooter Boat Lake

Description

This is a photograph of the Scooter Boat Lake, South Marine Park, South Shields, August 1950. Reference: DT.TUR/2/5197A This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/. A Blog on this collection of images can be read here (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. A parents address to his firstborn son pt2

Description

This is a letter found in Tyne & Wear Archives. Reference: DX-378-5-2 The letter is a parents address to his first born son on the day of its birth. The sentimental letter was written by James Davison of Low Fell in the late 19th Century. This letter is taken from a collection sourced for the project Half Memory by musician Richard Dawson. Half Memory was devised by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums in partnership with Tusk Music and Pixel Palace, resulting in a unique audio-visual performance inspired by museums and archive collections. More images from ?The Glass Trunk? can be found here. The contents of the collection resulted in his album ?The Glass Trunk? featuring songs inspired by items and images found in Tyne & Wear Archives by Richard Dawson. These items and images ranged from songs and stories found in a 1791 scrap book, photography taken from collections documenting ships built in Tyne & Wear and photographic records of the regions social history. More information on ?The Glass Trunk? can be found here. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons.
