Political behaviour Political behaviour

Description

This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught Autumn Semester 2010/2011. This module will introduce students to key debates in the study of political behaviour. The module will focus specifically on the core ‘pillars’ of political behaviour (elections, voting, political participation and, to a lesser extent, public opinion). Through the module students will explore theories and methodologies used by political scientists to study these key aspects of political behaviour. Voters, political parties, party members and activists, and forms of political participation more generally will be addressed. The module will build on the knowledge students might have gained during their undergraduate degrees while introducing them to new debates and l This is a module framework. TALAT Lecture 2401: Fatigue Behaviour and Analysis

Description

This lecture explains why, when and where fatigue problems may arise and the special significance to aluminium as structural material; it helps to understand the effects of material and loading parameters on fatigue; to appreciate the statistical nature of fatigue and its importance in data analysis, evaluation and use; it shows how to estimate fatigue life under service conditions of time-dependent, variable amplitude loading; how to estimate stresses acting in notches and welds with conceptual approaches other than nominal stress; it provides qualitative and quantitative information on the classification of welded details and allow for more sophisticated design procedures. Background in materials engineering, design and fatigue is required.

22.314J Structural Mechanics in Nuclear Power Technology (MIT) 22.314J Structural Mechanics in Nuclear Power Technology (MIT)

Description

This course deals with structural components in nuclear power plant systems, their functional purposes, operating conditions, and mechanical-structural design requirements. It combines mechanics techniques with models of material behavior to determine adequacy of component design. Considerations include mechanical loading, brittle fracture, in-elastic behavior, elevated temperatures, neutron irradiation, and seismic effects. This class was also offered in Course 13 (Department of Ocean Engineering) as 13.14J. In 2005, ocean engineering subjects became part of Course 2 (Department of Mechanical Engineering), and the 13.14J designation was dropped in lieu of 2.084J. DF5434 Understanding and Supporting Children's Behaviour

Description

This unit is designed to enable the student to gain an understanding of the reasons why young children behave the way they do and the factors that influence this behaviour. This unit will also enable you to explore strategies to use in the support of a range of behaviours, with consideration of the additional support needs for more challenging behaviour. Outcomes: 1.Identify and explain factors that influence children's behaviour. 2.Analyse and evaluate a range of strategies in the support of positive behaviour. 3.Investigate causes for concern and additional support needs. 4.Demonstrate an awareness of the roles of other professionals and the strategies they use in the support of positive behaviour in children with additional support needs.

Approaches to political studies Approaches to political studies

Description

This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught Autumn Semester 2010. This module introduces students to alternative theoretical approaches to the study of political phenomena. We consider the different forms of analysing, explaining, and understanding politics associated with approaches such as behaviouralism, rational choice theory, institutionalism, Marxism, feminism, interpretive theory and post-modernism. This module shows that the different approaches are based upon contrasting ‘ontological’ suppositions about the nature of politics, and they invoke alternative ‘epistemological’ assumptions about how we acquire valid knowledge of politics and international relations. We examine questions such as: what constitutes valid knowledge This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught Autumn Semester 2010. DE3C34 Marketing: An Introduction

Description

This unit is designed to provide you with a basic knowledge and understanding of marketing and the operations of a marketing department within an organisation. This Unit introduces you to the basic concepts of marketing and marketing research. It explains the nature and purpose of marketing in both profit and non-profit making organisations and introduces the concept of the marketing mix. You will consider organisations’ product, pricing, distribution and promotional decisions in relation to changing market conditions and you will examine marketing in terms of both consumer and industrial markets. The Unit relates to the marketing of both products and services. Marketing should be at the heart of all organisations and you will consider marketing’s pivotal role in relation to other orga

Computational Perspectives on the Structure and Information Flows in Online Networks

Description

In this talk, Jure discusses how the computational perspective can be applied to questions involving the structure of online networks and the dynamics of information that flow through such networks. With an increasing amount of social interaction taking place online, we are accumulating large amounts of data about phenomena that were once essentially invisible to us: the collective behaviour and social interactions of hundreds of millions of people. Analyzing this data computationally offers enormous potential to address both long-standing scientific questions, and to harness and inform the design of future social computing applications.

Computational Perspectives on the Structure and Information Flows in Online Networks

Description

In this talk, Jure Leskovec discusses how the computational perspective can be applied to questions involving the structure of online networks and the dynamics of information that flow through such networks.
