Members of the Brownie pack

Description

This appears to show a presentation to a member of the Brownie pack at the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, January 1962 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28235C). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. Hayfield Here We Come

Description

Sunderland blind children in a hayfield with their carers. 18 of the 22 had never been in one before and several had not been in a motor. All but one, felt the shape of a cow for the first time, and were alarmed at its size. July 1924 ?To them, their fingers are eyes? Description

How do we communicate with the outside world? How are our senses of vision, smell, taste and pain controlled at the cellular and molecular levels? What causes medical conditions like allergies, hypertension, depression, obesity and various central nervous system disorders? G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) provide a major part of the answer to all of these questions. GPCRs constitute the largest family of cell-surface receptors and in humans are encoded by more than 1,000 genes. GPCRs convert extracellular messages into intracellular responses and are involved in essentially all physiological processes. GPCR dysfunction results in numerous human disorders, and over 50% of all prescription drugs on the market today directly or indirectly target GPCRs. Children from Sunderland?s School for the Blind with a selection of war souvenirs

Description

When the First World War began Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery had been established for 68 years. The Director in 1914 was the formidable J. A. Charlton Deas who is remembered principally for his pioneering work, started in 1913, with the blind, giving them hands on access to the collection so that they could see with their fingers. Deas was also a pioneer in touring exhibitions and in contemporary recording. In November 1914 he was requested to also take on the role of Supervising Librarian at West Hartlepool, after the librarian there had joined up. One month later West Hartlepool was bombarded by the German Imperial Navy. Although he tried collecting objects from the bombardment ?there was great demand for them? and he could not secure any but he was successful in acquiring nearly 100 photographs showing the aftermath, which he used in an exhibition shown in both West Hartlepool and Sunderland. In July 1919 Deas was responsible for organising Sunderland?s impressive Peace Parade. It included elaborate floats representing the countries of our allies as well as contingents of the armed forces and civilian organisations that took part.
