Description
Name: Ellen Leavy alias Burns Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 March 1906 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-39-Ellen Leavy AKA Burns For an image of her accomplice (and daughter), Rose Sparrow, see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/16888885997/in/album-72157.... The Shields Daily News for 12 March 1906 reports: ?SHOP-DOOR ROBBERIES AT NORTH SHIELDS. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER SENT TO PRISON. At North Shields Police Court today Ellen Leavey (46), 8 Barrington Lane and Rose Sparrow (26), Park Street, South Shields, mother and daughter, were charged on remand with having, on the 3rd March, stolen from the shop door of No. 96 Bedford Street, a child?s dress, valued at 6s 11d, or with receiving the same, well knowing it to have been stolen. An assistant with the prosecutrix (Miss M.A. Hogg), a draper, said she missed the dress and gave information to the police. Inspector Thornton said that he arrested the prisoner Sparrow in Barrington Street, South Shields and charged her with the theft and she replied that she was so drunk that she knew nothing about it. PC Graham said he arrested Leavey in the back lane of Sibthorpe Street, she then having the dress in her possession. He charged her and she made no reply. They were further charged on the same date with having stolen seven blouses valued at 13s 8d from the shop door of Mr Thos. Heslop, draper, Saville Street. Prosecutor said that at 3.20 pm, from what he was told, he followed the prisoners down Rudyard Street back lane and found the seven blouses and two pairs of boots under the shawl of the younger prisoner. The elder woman had also two pairs of boots. He detained Leavey until the arrival of the police, but Sparrow bolted. Bridget Leavey, a child of 10 and a daughter and sister of the prisoners, who was with them, said she saw Rosie steal the articles and give them to her mother to run way with. Prisoners were also charged with having stolen four pairs of boots, valued at 16s 10d, from the shop door of Messrs Stead and Simpson, 2 Saville Stret, on the 3rd inst. and further with having stolen a shawl, valued at 3s, from the shop door of Margaret Armstrong on the 3rd inst. Similar evidence was given and upon being formally charged Leavey pleaded not guilty and Sparrow admitted the thefts and said her mother had nothing to do with them. She asked to be leniently dealt with. She had taken to drink in consequence of her husband having neglected her and if she was given one more chance she would keep off the drink and never enter the town again. The magistrate committed them to prison for 7 days in each case, one month in all. The Chairman (Ald Collins), after giving the decision, said the tradesmen were very much to blame for hanging goods outside the door. If they insisted on hanging goods outside, they must have someone to watch them. The Chief Constable said they were indebted to Mr Heslop for the arrest of the prisoners?. These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Description
Name: Sarah Garbitt Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 November 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-45-Sarah Garbitt The Shields Daily News for 6 November 1907 reports: "SHOP DOOR ROBBERIES AT NORTH SHIELDS. A SAD CASE. At North Shields Police Court today, Sarah Garbutt (58), married, Howdon, was charged with having stolen on the 4th inst. from the doors of four shops a quantity of of dress material, shirts and towels, the property of Messrs M.J. Fisher, Thos. Heslop and James Southwick. Evidence was given to the effect that the goods were pawned by the prisoner. Accused pleaded guilty and said she would not have committed the theft had they not been starving. The husband of the prisoner, who was in court, was called forward. He appeared to be a decent, respectable old man and he told the magistrates they had been suffering from starvation. They had never been in a court in their lives before and he could assure the magistrates that if they dealt leniently with his wife she would not come back again. The Mayor: What are you? I am a miner by trade, but I lost my employment. Why? Through old age. How do you live? We depend on a son, but we only get from him 21s or 22s a week and we have to keep him. He is a young man and he gets no allowance for rent and receives no coal, so we have a good deal to do with the money. The Chairman said they had given the case serious consideration. They had almost been disposed to send the accused to prison, the thefts having been so continuous, but as this was apparently her first offence they would take a lenient view and give her the benefit of the First Offenders' Act and bind her over in the sum of 20s to be of good behaviour for 12 months, accepting the husband as bond." Description
Guests attending the launch of the tanker ?British Cavalier? at the North Sands shipyard of J.L. Thompson & Sons, Sunderland, 19 June 1962 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT4/PH/1/700/1/1). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger.
