6.270 Autonomous Robot Design Competition (MIT) 6.270 Autonomous Robot Design Competition (MIT)

Description

Includes audio/video content: AV special element video. 6.270 is a hands-on, learn-by-doing class, in which participants design and build a robot that will play in a competition at the end of January. The goal for the students is to design a machine that will be able to navigate its way around the playing surface, recognize other opponents, and manipulate game objects. Unlike the machines in Design and Manufacturing I (2.007), 6.270 robots are totally autonomous, so once a round begins, there is no human intervention. The goal of 6.270 is to teach students about robotic design by giving them the hardware, software, and information they need to design, build, and debug their own robot. The subject includes concepts and applications that are related to various MIT classes (e.g. Includes audio/video content: AV special element video. 6.270 is a hands-on, learn-by-doing class, in which participants design and build a robot that will play in a competition at the end of January. 'Kosmaj' afloat after launch

Description

?Kosmaj? afloat after launch by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd and the North Sands shipyard, 18 August 1977 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/4/PH/2/7). The shipyard did a remarkable job of replacing the bottom structure of the vessel after much of it was destroyed by fire in March 1977. Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. Opening an exhibition of Indian products

Description

John Grantham, Lord Mayor of Newcastle, at the opening of a Government of India exhibition at 130 Grainger Street, Newcastle, 18 July 1937 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/5/3). The Lady Mayoress was presented with a basket of Indian products These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham?s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses.
