21W.015 Writing and Rhetoric: Writing about Sports (MIT) 21W.015 Writing and Rhetoric: Writing about Sports (MIT)

Description

"Sports, not religion, is the opiate of the people." So says David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker and a former sportswriter. Many of our heroes are sports heroes, and for many of us, sports were an important part of our childhood years. Sports are big business, even on college campuses, and they are the subject of many classic movies. In this introductory writing class we consider the role of sports in our own lives and explore the cultural meanings of sports in America. Sports have produced a large body of excellent descriptive and analytic writing; we'll read writers as diverse as Hank Aaron, John Updike, David Foster Wallace, and Malcolm Gladwell on the joys and conundrums of baseball, boxing, football, tennis, and running. OLYMPIC VALUES: Keeping the Amateurs Amateur.

Description

Given the financial clout of professional sport, it is little wonder that many athletes are tempted to turn professional after amateur wins. Boxing is perhaps the clearest example of a sport where athletes are faced with the fundamental amateur v pro debate: do they retain amateur status to live the dream of competing on home soil as Olympic boxers in the London 20102 Games, or take the tempting financial route of lucrative professional contracts and World Championship titles, with the downside of potentially entering the ring too fast than their experience and youth might ideally allow?

Boxing Clever: What boxing can tell us about our culture and society.

Description

Boxing is arguably one of the most exciting, important, controversial and memorable sports on the Olympic roll-call. It occupied a position as one of the most revered and prestigious sports in the Ancient Games, making heroes and legends of men. Such a practice seems to have been continued in the present day, with the BBC Sportsman of the Century, Muhammad Ali, having first achieved notable fame as an Olympic athlete and champion.

Muhammad Ali visits Washington

Description

This is a photograph of Muhammad Ali during an exhibition bout at the Sporting Club of Washington, UK in 1977. Reference: 5417/291/3 This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013. The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington. However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community. These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs. For more information on the Washington Heritage Festival, 21st September 2013 please click here. (Copyright) These images are Crown Copyright.
