Preparing for a launch

Description

View of the tugboat ?Flying Wizard? being prepared for launch by the shipyard workers of J.L. Thompson & Sons Ltd at the former shipyard of John Crown & Sons, Sunderland, 9 June 1960 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/24495X). Sunderland has a remarkable history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering. From the development of turret ships in the 1890s and the production of Doxford opposed piston engines after the First World War through to the designs for Liberty ships in the 1940s and SD14s in the 1960s. Sunderland has much to be proud of. Tyne & Wear Archives cares for tens of thousands of photographs in its shipbuilding collections. Most of these focus on the ships ? in particular their construction, launch and sea trials. This set looks to redress the balance and to celebrate the work of the men and women who have played such a vital part in the region?s history. The images show the human side of this great story, with many relating to the world famous shipbuilding and engineering firm William Doxford & Sons Ltd. The Archives has produced a short blog to accompany these images. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Interior of one of the lift shafts during construction

Description

One of the workmen is in a bucket waiting to be hoisted to the surface. The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. These two purpose-built tunnels were designed to connect Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside under the river Tyne. At a cost of 833,000, these 900 ft (274.5 m) long tunnels, which run parallel to each other, have been connecting the communities on the North and South banks of the river Tyne for the past 60 years. The Open Air Pool

Description

This is a photograph of maintenance work at the Open Air Pool, South Shields, c1930s. Reference: 3535/208/7 This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/.
