Enhancing Physics Knowledge for Teaching – Electric and Magnetic Fields

Description

This session will introduce you to electric and magnetic fields. We’ll look at what we mean by a field and at what electric charge is and relate the two through Gauss’s theorem. From this we’ll derive Coulomb’s law for the force between charges. Then we’ll look at the concept of electrical potential which is related to the work done in moving a charge through a field. We’ll return to the notion of capacitance which we used in session 4, this time looking at how capacitance is computed. Finally we’ll take out first look at magnetism from the point of view of the magnetic effects of current.

Core Physics PBL – Sugar Capacity.

Description

Students will have four laboratory sessions to perform their experiments, as well as two seminars with facilitators. For each of the seminars students should submit answers to set question, which will then be checked and corrected if they need to be. The questions are designed to give ideas or direction to the laboratory work undertaken.

Description

This unit is designed to enable learners to develop knowledge and understanding and apply basic electrical concepts and theorems to the solution of simple electrical problems. It also provides an opportunity to examine first order transient responses as found in RL and RC series circuits and to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to solve single-phase a.c. circuit problems using complex notation.
