On the bridge of 'Naess Crusader'

Description

View inside bridge on ?Naess Crusader?, 4 June 1973 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/61732C). These photographs were taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They celebrate the construction of the OBO (oil/bulk/ore) carrier ?Naess Crusader?, covering the early stages in January 1972 through her launch on 21 December 1972 to her completion and sea trials in July 1973. ?Naess Crusader? and her sister ship ?Nordic Chieftain? were built by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd at the firm?s North Sands Shipyard for Anglo Eastern Bulkships Ltd. They were the largest ships ever built on the River Wear. The memory of ?Naess Crusader? is integral to the Sunderland Keel Line, a new public artwork, opened in 2015, which celebrates the City?s shipbuilding heritage. The Keel Line is 291.7 metres long and that distance was chosen because it represents the full length of ?Naess Crusader?. This album is a reminder of Sunderland?s proud industrial heritage and a tribute to the skill and dedication of her shipyard workers. Opening an exhibition of Indian products

Description

John Grantham, Lord Mayor of Newcastle, at the opening of a Government of India exhibition at 130 Grainger Street, Newcastle, 18 July 1937 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/5/3). The Lady Mayoress was presented with a basket of Indian products These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham?s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses. A Family in a Beach Chalet

Description

This is a photograph of a family in a beach chalet, South Shields, August 1950. Reference: DT.TUR/2/5255C This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/. Nike

Description

This is a photograph documenting the opening of Nike in Washington, UK. The photograph was taken at some point in the 1970's or early 1980's. Reference: 5417/335/2 This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013. The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington. However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community. These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs. For more information on the Washington Heritage Festival, 21st September 2013 please click here. (Copyright) These images are Crown Copyright. The cure is at hand

Description

The husband finds the answer to his problems at a Turners shop in Newcastle. No more sitting in front of a screen for him (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28465H). You can read a blog relating to these images here www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne & Wear Archives is very fortunate to hold the photographic negatives of the firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. The collection contains many remarkable images commissioned by local firms during the second half of the Twentieth Century. The Turners collection also includes images taken by the firm to promote their own business and this set shows a short series of images taken in March 1962 to promote the sale of cameras in their shops. They tell the story of a bored husband, his mind numbed by television, and his worried wife. Looking for inspiration, the man passes by a Turners shop window and discovers the wonder of photography. At once his happiness returns and matrimonial harmony is restored. We?ve no record of the captions used by Turners to accompany these images so we?ve used a bit of artistic licence and created our own. Maybe you can suggest alternatives.
