Cheerleading is one such sport, which is currently enjoying a rapid increase in global participation, an explosion of coaching awards and newly qualified coaches, strides forward in the quality of competition and development of Governing bodies, and a clear denunciation between the dance and stunting disciplines of the sport

Tyne & Wear Archives is very fortunate to hold the photographic negatives of the firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. The collection contains many remarkable images commissioned by local firms during the second half of the Twentieth Century. The Turners collection also includes images taken by the firm to promote their own business and this set shows a short series of images taken in March 1962 to promote the sale of cameras in their shops.
They tell the story of a bored husband, his mind numbed by television, and his worried wife. Looking for inspiration, the man passes by a Turners shop window and discovers the wonder of photography. At once his happiness returns and matrimonial harmony is restored.
We?ve no record of the captions used by Turners to accompany these images so we?ve used a bit of artistic licence and created our own. Maybe you can suggest alternatives.

Welcome to their Majesties

On 22 November Prince William will be visiting Sunderland and South Tyneside to take part in a number of youth development events. During the visit he will also officially open Haven Point, the new leisure centre in South Shields.
To celebrate this Tyne & Wear Archives has produced a short flickr set remembering past royal visits to the region?s shipyards. Most of the visits featured here took place during difficult times and they gave a real boost to public spirits in the face of two World Wars.

These images are part of the Tyne & Wear Archives Shipyard Collection. In July 2013 the outstanding historical significance of the Collection was recognised by UNESCO through its inscription to the UK Memory of the World Register.

This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013.
The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington.
However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community.
These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs.

Conjurer entertaining children
Description
View of a children?s party following the launch of the bulk carrier ?Gloxinia?, 20 February 1958 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/4/21/3). The vessel was launched by Dorothy Anne Robinson, daughter of Nicholas J. Robinson, a director of the Stag Line.
This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East?s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields.
The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead?s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984.
Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ?x? lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings.

Children's Christmas party organised by the West End Benevolent Fund
Description
John Grantham, Sheriff of Newcastle at a Christmas party for children of Amalgamated Engineers Union members, provided by the West End Benevolent Fund, 20 December 1924 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/1/1).
These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham?s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times.
2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses.
