Eilert Tiller, Norwegian sailor, arrested for breaking and entering

Description

Name: Eilert Tiller Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 December 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-119-Eliert Tiller For an image of his accomplice Patrick Liljebald see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/25657821142/in/album-72157.... The Shields Daily News for 13 December 1907 reports: ?SEAFARING MEN SENT TO PRISON. Patrick Liljebald (35), described as a ship?s steward, of Gothenburg, and Eilert Tiller (20), a Norwegian sailor, were brought up on remand charged with breaking and entering on the 5th December a shop situate on the Union Quay, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco etc, of the value of 1 4s 2d, the property of Messrs E.H. Smith and Co. The Chief Constable (Mr J.H. Huish) withdrew this charge and preferred one of simple larceny. Evidence was given to the effect that PC Armstrong, while on duty on the Union Quay, noticed that a window of the shop mentioned had been broken, and he in consequence kept observation upon the premises. Blowing his whistle and waving his lamp about he attracted the attention of a night watchman ? Lawrence Bonholm ? who came to his assistance. Leaving the latter outside, the officer entered the premises and found the two prisoners who tried to conceal themselves. He took them into custody and had them conveyed to the police station. On being charged with breaking and entering the premises, Liljebald said he had only gone there to get a sleep, while the other prisoner made no reply. They were both sent to prison for one month with hard labour.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Grey's Monument, Newcastle upon Tyne

Description

Looking towards Grey's Monument, Newcastle upon Tyne, November 1963 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/32626B). You can see an aerial view of this area from 1963 in another of our sets www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/15408514332/in/set-7215762.... Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Thomas Foreman, arrested for breaking and entering a tobacconist's shop

Description

Name: Thomas Foreman Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 23 June 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-109-Thomas Foreman For an image of his accomplice Benjamin Garrett see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/23238574715/. The Shields Daily News for 24 June 1907 reports: ?BREAKING INTO A TOBACCONIST?S SHOP AT NORTH SHIELDS At North Shields Police Court today, Thos. Foreman (20), Little Bedford Street; Benjamin Garrett (19), Trevor Terrace, and George Lowe (19), Stanley Street West, were charged with breaking and entering the shop, 88 Bedford Street, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigars and cigarettes, value 12s 6d, the property of John Foster, on the 22nd inst. The prosecutor stated that he?d locked up on Saturday at 11.20 pm and at 3.30 the following morning he was called to the shop and found that the window had been broken and the goods mentioned stolen. PC Fraser stated that at 1.30 am on Sunday, by the instruction of Sergt. Charlton, he concealed himself in the lane near the shop, and saw Garrett go to the window and help himself to cigars and cigarettes. Sergeant Charlton said he saw Lowe and Foreman loitering in front of the shop. Witness concealed himself in a doorway and heard a crash of glass. The two men bolted when they saw him, but he caught Foreman, searched him and found tobacco and cigarettes in his pocket. The prisoner told him he had made it up with other two in Bennett?s house in Church Way to break into the shop. Witness apprehended Lower at 10 Stanley Street and found cuts upon his knuckles and some cigarettes in his inside pocket. When jointly charged Foreman replied that he got some cigarettes but did not break the window. Garrett said he was not there at the time and Lowe replied ?Yes?. Accused were each committed for seven days with hard labour.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK. Looking up Dean Street, Newcastle upon Tyne

Description

Looking up Dean Street from The Side, Newcastle upon Tyne, November 1963 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/32626D). Lawrence Armstrong alias Hanby, soldier, arrested for theft

Description

Name: Lawrence Armstrong alias Hanby Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 30 September 1915 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-262-Lawrence Armstrong AKA Hanby The Shields Daily News for 8 October 1915 reports: ?A SOLDIER COMMITTED FOR THEFT. Today at North Shields, Laurence Armstrong (21) of the 1st Northumberland Fusiliers was charged with having stolen on Sept. 20th a box of cigarettes valued at 5s from the shop of Henry Nicholson, tobacconist, Saville Street. An assistant of the prosecutor?s said she was serving a customer on the above date, when accused entered the shop, picked up a box of cigarettes and went away. Defendant was further charged with having stolen a dress ring, valued at 1, the property of Valone Harrison, conductress of a tramcar on Sept. 14th. The prosecutrix said the accused boarded a car on which she was following her employment. He asked to look at her ring. She took it off her finger and showed it to him. Witness then went to collect some fares and while she was thus engaged the accused got off the car. Detective Mason said that when accused was arrested on the previous charge a pawn ticket relating to the ring was found in his possession. Accused pleaded guilty and said he was very sorry. He had been seven months at the front and had been gassed. He was committed to prison for 14 days on each charge?. These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn?t record the details of each prisoner?s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ?Shields Daily News? looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.
