3.094 Materials in Human Experience (MIT) 3.094 Materials in Human Experience (MIT)

Description

This course examines the ways in which people in ancient and contemporary societies have selected, evaluated, and used materials of nature, transforming them to objects of material culture. Some examples are: glass in ancient Egypt and Rome; sounds and colors of powerful metals in Mesoamerica; cloth and fiber technologies in the Inca empire. It also explores ideological and aesthetic criteria often influential in materials development. Laboratory/workshop sessions provide hands-on experience with materials discussed in class. This course complements 3.091. Bedtime story

Description

Enjoying a bedtime story at the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1982 (TWAM ref. E.NC18/24). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. HMS Greyhound in dry dock

Description

Stern view of HMS Greyhound in dry dock, 1901 (TWAM ref. 2931 Misc58). HMS Greyhound was a C-class destroyer. During the First World War she took part in anti-submarine and counter-mining operations. The shipyard of R. & W. Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn built many fine warships. During the First World War the firm built 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyer leaders and 25 torpedo boat destroyers. The firm also built machinery and boilers for 2 battleships, and a further 3 light cruisers. These and other warships built by Hawthorn Leslie before the War, are remembered in this set. There are remarkable images of warships under construction at Hebburn, as well as fascinating shots of the people who attended the launches. The set also contains majestic views of the ships at sea. The images are not only a testimony to the skill of those who designed and built these ships but also to the courage of those who sailed in them.
