Working on a new ship at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd

Description

Reference: DS.JLT-5-3-8-1 This image has been taken from the Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd shipbuilders? collection. The photographs, taken at the Sunderland Based Shipyard were used in the publicity campaign 'The Art of Shipbuilding' published in 1946 to promote the firms of Joseph L. Thompson & Sons Ltd and Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd. Inspired by the upcoming Grayson Perry exhibition 'The Vanity in small differences' Tyne & Wear Archives have created this set in reaction to some of the themes surrounding Sunderland and its social make up that have been explored by Grayson Perry in his six large scale tapestries. This set features both Social and Landscape Photography of a nostalgic Sunderland; these consist of both Aerial views of the physical make up of Sunderland's landscape, mixed with social portraits of the working community and industrial scenes traditionally associated with Sunderland's Heritage. Both are relevant to Grayson Perry's upcoming collection of Tapestries exploring the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste. When recently interviewed on the subject Perry states "When I asked club singer Sean Foster-Conley what I should feature in my tapestries to show working-class taste, he said ?the mines and shipyards?. ?But they no longer exist,? I replied. In a very important way, however, he was right. The heavy industries that shaped the north of England also shaped the emotional lives of the generations of people who lived there. Winding towers and cranes can be torn down in a day, but the bonds, formed through shared hardship working under them, live on." These images of a community driven by industry, mixed with Aerial Views of the physical make up of Sunderland during this time reflect on Perry's view of the eternal relevance that Sunderland's social and industrial past has on its present community. More information on 'The Vanity of Small Differences' can be found here. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Charles S. Jones, arrested for stealing from clothes lines

Description

Name: Charles S. Jones Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 15 September 1914 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-254-Charles S Jones The Shields Daily News for 21 September 1914 reports: ?LARCENY FROM CLOTHES LINE. NORTH SHIELDS DEFENDANT COMMITTED TO PRISON. Today at North Shields, Charles Jones, no fixed abode, was charged with stealing a shirt, valued 2s, from a clothes line, on Sept. 14th, the property of Sarah Scott. Mrs Scott said the shirt was hanging on the line in Middle Street, where she resided. She was told something by a neighbour and later missed the shirt. Another witness said she noticed a vacant place on the clothes line and informed Mrs Scott. PC Pallister said he apprehended defendant, who on being searched, was found to be wearing the missing shirt under his own. A second charge of a similar nature was preferred against defendant, who was charged with stealing a shirt, valued 2s, the property of Mary Poolton, Queen Victoria Street. Jennie Cowey, Queen Victoria Street said she watched the defendant while in Queen Victoria Street and saw him go into Mrs Poolton?s yard. She walked past the door and saw defendant buttoning his coat. There were clothes hanging on a line in the yard. PC Pallister said he charged defendant with the theft and he replied ?I don?t know whether I got it or not?. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, made his 17th appearance and had been previously convicted in Sunderland and Middlesbrough for larceny. The Bench committed him to prison for one month in each case?. These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn?t record the details of each prisoner?s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ?Shields Daily News? looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time. A Psychic Portrait

Description

This mysterious collection of images have been discovered within the photographic collections of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums. Reference: TWCMS -H13098-73-2 The lantern slides are from a series titled 'Psychic Photography From A New Angle' and feature eerie images of the supposedly paranormal and unknown forces caught on camera. Very little is known of the origins of this collection. The slides were designed to accompany a lecture by a Mr C.P. MacCarthy of 15 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield. Mr MacCarthy produced the images under test conditions in 1934 in front of an invited committee at 76 Clarkehouse Road, Sheffield. He states the intention was to ?demonstrate under test conditions Fake Psychic Photography? to this committee. Mr MacCarthy states his three reasons for this demonstration. 1.To prove the possibility of Fake under test conditions. 2.To show you cannot be too critical of such phenomena. 3.To indicate the increasing scope for fraud with the probability of genuine spirit photography. Mr MacCarthy further guarantees ?in the sum of five pounds, payable to any charitable institution, that no collusion exists, or has existed between myself and any other party in connection with this demonstration.? Little is currently known of the Psychic demonstration. Who sat on the invited committee? Who was Mr MacCarthy? Why was he investigating Psychic Photography? Can you help us with this information? Insulating stator end windings (1914 ? 18)

Description

These images belong to the Parsons? ?Women Labourers? photograph album, taken at Parsons? Works on Shields Road during the First World War. (TWAM ref: 2402) The factory was founded by engineer Charles Parsons, best known for his invention of the steam turbine. In 1914, with the outbreak of war, Parsons? daughter Rachel, one of the first three women to study engineering at Cambridge, replaced her brother on the board of directors, and took on a role in the training department of the Ministry of Munitions, supporting the increasing amount of women taking on jobs in industry to support the war effort. More information about Rachel Parsons and Parsons? Works can be found in Great North Greats a guest post by David Wright.
