21W.730-3 Consumer Culture (MIT) 21W.730-3 Consumer Culture (MIT)

Description

What is the good life, and can you shop there? Would you want that life if you couldn't? Has shopping replaced working as the activity that gives the most meaning to our lives? The theme for this Expository Writing class is Consumer Culture. The class will explore what it means to belong to a consumer society—to think of ourselves, as Douglas Rushkoff puts it, less as citizens than as consumers. Readings will serve both as examples of effective writing techniques and as springboards for discussion. We’ll read essays that explore a variety of cultural meanings of shopping and that analyze the way advertising works. We will also read essays that critique consumer culture from several perspectives, including those of psychology, gender, art, environmentalism and ethics. Looking towards Newcastle City Centre from Jesmond, 1978

Description

Aerial view looking towards Newcastle upon Tyne City Centre from Jesmond, June 1978 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/CN11182F). In the foreground you can see Jesmond Metro Station under construction. Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of colour aerial photographs of Newcastle upon Tyne. These images were captured by the Newcastle-based photographic firm Turners Ltd during the mid to late 1970s. At first glance, some of these images give the impression that the Newcastle landscape hasn't changed much in 40 years. Look more closely, though, and some of the differences between then and now will reveal themselves - see how many you can spot. She was so shocked by her neighbours' antics that she took another look

Description

Model posing for a Turners publicity shot, July 1964(TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/34172P). To read a blog about Turners advertising techniques see www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne and Wear Archives presents a set of images taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They were taken by the firm on is own account for possible use in their advertising campaigns. Turners frequently hired models to help promote their work and to encourage sales in their shops. Some of the shots are humorous or bizarre while others are quite suggestive. The images are fascinating for what they tell us about the times that produced them ? the fashions, the attitudes, the technology ? Most of the images are quirky and almost seem to invite comments. If you?d like to suggest alternative captions we?d be delighted to hear them! (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Aerial view of Byker, 1978

Description

Aerial view over Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, showing the newly constructed Byker Wall, June 1978 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/CN11182B). 21W.730-3 Consumer Culture (MIT)

Readings

Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1960

Description

View along Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne from near Grey's Monument, May 1960 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/24387C). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Rita's new idea was inspired by the contents of an earlier bottle

Description

Model, Rita Fisher, posing for Turners, February 1955 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/13209R).
