Richard Percy Stewart

Description

Name: Richard P Stewart Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 20 January 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-63-Richard P Stewart The Shields Daily News for 27 January 1905 reports: "A PAINTER SENT TO GAOL Richard Percy Stewart (27), painter, Middlesbro', was charged with stealing on the 19th of May 1904 from a dwelling-house situate at 19 Eleanor Street, Cullercoats, a jacket and vest of the value of 2, the property of Patrick Kearney. From the evidence it appeared that the accused took lodgings at the above address and subsequently decamped, taking with him a jacket and vest belonging to a fellow-lodger. He was apprehended by the Middlesbro' police and was handed over to Inspector Proud who brought him to Shields. In answer to the charge he admitted the offence. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, blamed the drink. He was committed to prison for three months". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1).
