Valedictory Seminar by Andrew Bridges, Chief Inspector of Probation

Description

On 16 May 2011, the Centre for Criminology, Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford, hosted Mr Andrew Bridges' valedictory lecture on the occasion of his retirement as Chief Inspector of Probation. Mr Bridges, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Criminology (then called Centre for Criminological Research) in 1996, was introduced by Professor Roger Hood, the then Director of the Centre, who also led the Q and A session. The lecture was attended by academics, probation practitioners and managers, officials from the Ministry of Justice and National Offender Management Service and heads of youth offending teams. Andrew Bridges paid tribute to all those who have done excellent work with offenders and done a difficult job well. UCL Galton Collection Teaching Pack

Description

The Victorian scientist Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911) bequeathed a collection of objects to University College London on his death in 1911. These objects, which include Galton’s personal affects, custom-made objects used in his research and objects from the Galton Laboratory now compose the UCL Galton Collection. This resource has been compiled to showcase some of the objects in this collection and to list the subjects represented, which could be used in teaching. This resource has been created as part of the JISC funded project Object Based Learning for Higher Education (OBL4HE) - a project to create a range of online educational resources for university teachers and students based around the use of museum collections and archival material for enhancing learning. Crime and Violence: Forces for Good or Evil?

Description

This module critically evaluates contemporary understandings of crimes of violence. This unit will provide an understanding of the theoretical perspectives, definitions and understandings of the concept of violence. The unit will seek to assist students’ exploration of current attitudes towards violence within contemporary society. It will enable students to extend their understanding of criminological perspectives to the issue of violence particularly to specific groups and locations within society. Is violence always interpersonal? What are the relationships between the offender, the victim, society and the state? Is crime necessary for social progress? Do we as a society sometimes benefit from violence?

Description

This module seeks to explore the definition and nature of state crime in criminological and political discourse. It aims to develop a critical understanding of the nature of the state and the scale and type of crimes committed by state agents and agencies; A range of state crimes will be explored in both the domestic and international spheres.
