In this era of globalization, many of us have multi- or bi-cultural, multilingual or bilingual backgrounds, and even if we don't have such a background, we need urgently to understand the experiences of people who do. You will very likely work outside the United States at some point in your future; you will almost certainly work with people who speak more than one language, whose ancestry or origins are in a country other than the U.S., who have crossed borders of nation, language, culture, class to amalgamate into the large and diverse culture that is America. In this class we will read the personal narratives of bilingual and bicultural writers, some of whom have struggled to assimilate, others of whom have celebrated their own contributions to a culture of diversity. Description
The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. These two purpose-built tunnels were designed to connect Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside under the river Tyne. At a cost of £833,000, these 900 ft (274.5 m) long tunnels, which run parallel to each other, have been connecting the communities on the North and South banks of the river Tyne for the past 60 years. This course explores the issue of human trafficking for forced labour and sexual slavery, focusing on its representation in recent scholarly accounts and advocacy as well as in other media. Ethnographic and fictional readings along with media analysis help to develop a contextualized and comparative understanding of the phenomena in both past and present contexts. It examines the wide range of factors and agents that enable these practices, such as technology, cultural practices, social and economic conditions, and the role of governments and international organizations. The course also discusses the analytical, moral and methodological questions of researching, writing, and representing trafficking and slavery. Description
A view of the largest railway crossing in the World, taken from Central Station, Newcastle upon Tyne, c1930 (TWAM ref. DF.ATK/16/1/2). The postcard is unused. This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. The people, places and events they show can give us an insight into the past, documenting the landscape, the fashions, the way we lived. Some postcards are unused but others tell us something about the people who bought them, through the messages they wrote. They can give us a fascinating glimpse into people?s lives. Description
You will write fouSubjects
