How can far-right extremism be tackled through policy? Lessons from 10 EU countries

Description

In recent years, many European countries have been grimly reminded of the threat from far-right violence motivated by hatred towards migrants and minorities. This talk explores how 10 European countires are attempting to address this. Amongst other events, the attacks on Oslo in July 2011 and the discovery of the National Socialist Underground in Germany have fed the fear that right-wing violence is on the rise, and raised questions about whether this form of extremism has been a blind spot for European policy makers and security officials. This briefing sets out the results of a 2-year research project, funded by the European Commission, to assess policy and practitioner approaches to far-right extremism across 10 EU countries (UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germa Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/

as Illiberal Exceptionalism in Migration Law: The Role of the European Union

Description

Sergio Carrera examines how the process of Europeanization, the development of the European Union, has played a role in migration law and on the meaning and mechanisms of integration. 'Integration' is a term that is used in many different places and contexts and is increasingly prominent within public debates about migration in the UK and elsewhere in the West. 'Integration' remains vague in definition, which is perhaps one reason it can be useful in many varying contexts. Is it a new assimilationism, a reactionary retreat from multiculturalism, or a progressive, dynamic model for thinking about diversity? How does it relate to cohesion, to transnationalism and to cosmopolitanism? Can, and should, it be measured and monitored? How is it framed in relation to the different scales of gov Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/

- A Dual Agenda

Description

Professor Richard Caplan, Oxford, gives a talk for The Evolution of International Norms and Norm Entrepreneurship: The Council of Europe in Comparative Perspective. This one-day workshop will bring together officials and researchers working on the Council of Europe and international norms more generally. Our emphasis on the Council of Europe gives a concrete empirical starting point for consideration of international norms, norm 'entrepreneurship', and human rights. How do norms come onto the international political agenda? How are they turned into political or legal instruments? Who are the norm 'entrepreneurs'? Why do member states risk becoming entangled in an international normative and legal discourse about human rights that their governments may try to avoid 'at home'?
